    Shrikant Pokharkar

    from Mumbai, Maharashtra

My son, Mr Shrikant Sambhaji Pokharkar, age 34 years  was diagnosed with Marfan Syndrome, a genetic disorder, that commonly affects the bodys connective tissues, throughout the body. The disorder has affected his heart causing aortic enlargement from the past 8- 9 years , which is  life threatening.
On December 13, 2017 , due to aortic dissection , he had to undergo a critical operation under emergency conditions at Lilavati Hospital, Mumbai wherein his aortic root and mechanical valve replacement was done. Due to financial constraints in the family, the operation was done with the financial help and support of the family friends and well wishers.
But after 2 months of the operation, my son noticed swelling around the Sternum, the upper side of the chest.  Doctors at Lilavati advised him that he may need redo surgery which is not possible at Lilavati, So he was suggested to Asian Heart Institute.
There the doctors advised him to do CT Aorta Gram and Coronary Angiogram after 6 months of the surgery. The CT scan reports revealed  Paravalvular  leak with Hematoma surrounding the root of the aorta and third & forth sternal suture.
Doctors feared there may be infection from graft to sternum which could lead to very dangerous situation. So they advised him TE and  PET test. Reports unfortunately showed positive for infection.
Doctor suggested him to go under four weeks broad spectrum antibiotic infusion  course to bring the infection under control. And then  redo the complete Bentall surgey as the operation could only be performed only after the infection is controlled since the success rate due to infection will only be  20% to 25%.
As per the information provided by the Asian Heart doctor, it was not the complete Bentall that was performed during the emergency operation. Doctors at Lilavati didn't use the composite  material. Instead they had just put one small piece of graft at the dissection area and the mechanical valve separately, which was the main cause of leakage.
Within a span of 8 months, my son has to undergo an even more complex, critical and high risk open heart  Bentall surgery at Dr Devi Shettys  Narayan Hrudayalaya at  Bangalore to save on the high cost of surgery which would otherwise cost around Rs 20 lakhs if done in Mumbai.
But all through out his endeavour to live, inspite of the life threatening disorder   my son has remained determined and optimistic.
A mother sincerely requests all the generous well wishers to help me save my only support in life- my son Shrikant Pokharkar.
