Shine Sunshine

Located in one of the congested by-lanes of Vivek Nagar, Sunshine Public school is a private institution that provides a medium for English education to the children from the near by low income group families mostly daily wage earners.

I am Praseeda,  currently the class  teacher for grade 2.  I am representing "Teach for India" and this is my humble step towards a much bigger goal of attaining educational equity.

School complex is a mere couple of buildings in a small plot, they do not have the luxury of a playground or even a common assembly area. Students here do not have access to benefits which are indispensable as tool for learning & academic growth which are typical in low-cost private schools in low- and middle groups. They spent the whole day holed up in the classroom and do not have a support system at school or at home to provide them the needed exposure & tools to go beyond the text books.

After working closely with them around four months, I learnt that there were many talented kids has it in them to dream beyond their father/mother's profession.
I believe that to sustain their interest and keep them excited to learn, there should more avenues beyond the textbook & classroom learning. Most of these students lag far behind due to lack of exposure and
These are the few avenues I have identified to assist the classroom learning.

  1. Organizing field trips for primary students to explore & learn - e.g visit to science museum [VITM, HAL aerospace], planetarium [JNP], zoo [BBNP ]
  2. Setting up a mini library primarily to help improve the reading ability & communication
Below list provides a split of the cost involved
How would this help
1. Expose students to new experiences and increase their interest in learning through organized trips
2. Help them apply what they see and be able to relate better to concepts being taught in classroom
3. Having a library & access to books apart from text books, will help increase the English vocabulary and develop reading & writing skills
4. No matter what you’re wanting to do or become, you can’t do it without more knowledge. Reading is an excellent way to get where you’re wanting to go.
