Story

My name is Shefali Gupta. I am currently pursuing BA LLB from DR. B.R. Ambedkar national law university, Sonipat. As a law student working on social causes interests me. I am a member of my college’s NSS unit which works for social cause. Also, I am currently interning at Hamari Pahchan NGO which is dedicated to uplift the underprivileged.
I chose the topic GADGETSHALA because it intends to provide internet facilities, smart gadgets etc to underprivileged people. The unavailability of digital devices as a social cause is contemporary and less people are aware about it. Gadgetshala is a great initiative which works upon strengthening Education, the medium to uplift the deprived ones.
The pandemic affected the lives of people all over the world. Due to the pandemic, nation- wide lockdowns were imposed which led to the closure of schools, colleges, shops, factories and restricted access to public services. During such times technology happened to be a saviour and provided an online way of doing things. However the technology wasn’t accessible to everyone in uniform manner. Education was one of the most affected sectors.Digital divide affected the lives of children from vulnerable families who couldn’t afford digital devices.

According to the data provided by UNICEF, the above figure presents a contrast between the availability of internet between the poor and rich children in India (lower-middle income country).
The report titled ‘Initiatives by School Education Sector in 2020-21” prepared by the Ministry of Education provides with the number of children in various states and UTs with no access to digital devices. The report shows a wide digital divide in some large states such as Bihar, Assam, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
The above chart presents that around 290 million students didn’t have access to digital devices which resulted in affecting their education. Online learning is the future of our nation. It provides an opportunity to access online educational videos, eBooks, e-courses etc . Along with that, it is a solution to the shortage of teachers for underprivileged students who cannot afford going to school. It would allow a large number of children to learn without actually attending school. . Hence it is necessary for everyone to have an access to technology to exercise their Right to Education which is guaranteed under the Article 21A of the constitution.

In order to curb the problem of digital divide steps are needed to be taken at both individual level and as society as whole. As an individual, I would help my house help’s children to have an access to online classes. I would certainly try to save money each month and donate for the cause. As well as I would try to raise awareness on this issue. As a society a whole, I want others to support NGOS and various organisations working for social cause by either donating or promoting them. Digital literacy programs could also be initiated to raise awareness for online learning.
This fundraiser is one of the attempt to contribute towards the betterment of the underprivileged.

Our plan of action is to establish
1. Internet facilities
2. Smart gadgets like mobile phones, laptops, and computers.
3. A mobile van to make this “ GADGETSHALA” accessible in various areas.
4. Your valuable time to teach these children.

1 Laptop costs around Rs. 25,000.
1 Tablet costs around Rs. 10,000.
1 Computer costs around Rs. 25000
1 Mobile Van costs around Rs. 5,00,000

I request you all to take action and contribute to this fundraiser. Even a small amount would matter to help these students achieve educational stability. With your support, these students will be able to attend classes on a regular basis and will be prepared to take
responsibility for a more educated India.
By doing our part, we are not only assisting a student in obtaining an education, but we are
also encouraging and contributing to our country's bright future.
