The focus of this campaign, the Serkong School, Tabo is located in the Spiti valley in Himachal Pradesh. Spiti is a remote cold desert, situated close to the Chinese border, with difficult terrain and harsh weather. The winter temperatures can plummet to as low as -30 deg. C, and during those times, the valley is as good as cut off from the mainland. The school was established in 1999 to ensure that the children from this remote part of the country get access to a decent all round education, in conjunction with their local culture. Due to the remote location and problems in accessibility, the school is in constant need of funds and resources. When I visited the school during my recent trip, the headmistress appealed for help in various areas, to carry forward the good work they are doing (I can personally attest to that, having seen them do exceptional work for the last 2 years I’ve known & worked with them).
The school is presently in urgent need of things such as benches, desks, blackboards, play kits, lab equipment, etc. (see list given by the school headmistress attached above). Currently the school is somehow making do with the extremely limited resources they have, and most of it is in pretty ragtag shape, due to constant passing down from one batch to another since the inception of the school. So if any of you wish to put your good intent into action, here's a cause worthy enough! And even if you can’t be directly involved, we would be grateful if you even just pass on the word to friends and relatives who might be inclined to help. On the behalf of all those bright-eyed kids of Spiti, a big Thank You!! :)
