Save This 20-Year-Old Who Has Lost His Large Intestine

The doctor said, "If we take him out of ICU, your son may not survive."

These words are very painful for any parent to listen. Let me share what has happened to my son Priyam Sow.

For the past 25 days, my son Priyam has been admitted to a hospital. Initially, he had constant bleeding for 4-5 days, he was soon shifted to Bangalore. He was immediately admitted to Emergency on January 20th where his treatment began for diagnosing the correct disease. Within 5-6 days, after doing a lot of tests on him, doctors told us that his large intestine was badly infected, as seen during the colonoscopy. Doctors stopped giving him solid food on January 28th and started his liquid diet directly through his veins. He has low blood (Hg) level, as he was constantly losing blood - so he was given blood the day before and on the day of his surgical operation. He had an operation on January 30th morning, where 100% of his large intestine has been removed. Post-surgery, he was shifted to ICU in the evening for observation, and he hasn't got a chance to come out of it. The estimated medical expenditure during emergency admission was Rs 80,000 which increased to Rs 4-5 lacs because of the operation as on January 30th.

Inside ICU, his blood pressure, heart rate, blood count and respiratory rate was constantly fluctuating every single day. He was still on the liquid diet as his small intestine movement is yet to become active. He started experiencing breathing problems. He was initially put under the oral mask but within a day he was shifted to ventilation for breathing.  After chest X-ray and ultrasonography (USG) he was diagnosed with pneumonia where his lungs got diffused because of the infection. He also started having water accumulation, his hands & legs started swelling up.  He also had water accumulation along the lining of his lungs. First, his back was punctured to bring the water out of his lungs. A day later, when his health and body temperature didn’t improve, he was given the costliest antibiotics and anti-fungal medicines. He started having at least Rs 1 lakh worth medicines every day, starting from February 5th. His conditions improved for a day. Doctors did a CT Scan and USG of his abdomen and found out there was water accumulation in his abdomen as well. He was immediately taken to another surgery on February 9th to remove the accumulated water. By this time the re-estimated expenses given to us was Rs 16 lakhs. Today (Feb 14th) his condition hasn’t improved yet, he has 104-105 degree temperature for the last 30 hours and his blood pressure was as low as 90/50 yesterday night. The total expenses have crossed Rs 16 lakhs and the ICU doctors suggested that based on his fluctuating conditions, he is so weak that he won't be able to survive if we try shifting him to another hospital at this point in time. Doctors said that because of his highly fluctuating vitals, keeping him in ICU is the only way he can survive right now. The re-estimated cost of his expenses is now over 20 lakhs, as said on Feb 14th evening.

I’m a primary school teacher in West Bengal. We have used all our savings in the treatment so far. We even sold our agricultural lands and have been able to give 12 lakhs so far. My 20-year-old son has been fighting for his life for the last 25 days here at the hospital, it has been 15 days inside ICU, he is having 1 lakh worth medicines/day, he already had 2 surgeries so far. As parents, we are doing everything we can to save him, but we really need your support as we don't have any much money to pay the pending amount and keep him in ICU.

How can you help?

I now request to you all to please lend your helping hand so that you can help me save my 20-year-old son by keeping him in ICU till he recovers.
I will personally be very grateful for the support you have shown for us. I wish no parents go through what we have gone through in the last 25 days. Wishing you and your family a healthy life.

Dear Supporters,

Priyam has been taken out of the ICU, and has been shifted to the general ward, under observation. His vital conditions are better than before, but he is very weak. Nurses have started giving a little bit of oral food, every day. Physiotherapist also comes every day to do a bit of movement of his hands and legs, as he was on the ICU bed for the past 2 months. It will still take few weeks for him to recover completely.

The total bill is over Rs 28 Lacs (excluding medicines) and the re-estimated hospital expenses will be Rs 30 Lacs. Please find below the attached re-estimated report from the hospital. The total due amount is over 8 lacs now, which we need to pay to the hospital. We humbly request you to kindly share this campaign with your friends and family to help in raising funds towards his treatment.

Thank you!
