Hello, good people. Please listen and watch my poem where I speak about What Art Means To Me: Here

Let's Start with Art #tounmuteindia is my Fundraiser-Campaign associated with Slam Out Loud's Crowdfunding Fundraiser between the 12th and 20th of February 2021.

Slam Out Loud is a nonprofit supporting children from disadvantaged communities through the power of art.
#letusstartwithart and bring the joy of art closer to children from disadvantaged communities to start a chain of positive actions, experiences, futures. Let us be the beginning of this glorious change by contributing whatever little we can.

What Art Means To Me. A Poem.

What Art Means to MeArt is messy and it is quite weird
But it is so much fun
It comes in all shapes and sizes
And never judges anyone
It is my voice on my quietest days
It captures my joy and my love
It creates my flaws and my hurt
I melt my woes in words
And store my thoughts in cryptic lines
It is my morning ballet, it is my evening love
Even when I make blotches and patches, tears and scratches
It lets me be
Even when I make eight ugly shadows and two crooked lines (or 3)
It lets me be
Art is there for me, on my loneliest roads
It is there for me a day after grief, it is there when joy departs
Or on days of sunshine, when I bathe in Art
Now you know how much art means to me
But it is better when its shared
And we make rainbows together
And write poems about love
Art is meant for you and me
The colour blue, those shapes and being free
Art is not for him, or her, it is for everyone
It is a twirl, a dark landscape, it is an unfinished song,
It is half a step, It is a flight, it is a fantasy, it is a voice,
I have shared my love for art with you, I hope you pay it forward too.

"I can strive to be an independent learner. I can search for my own boundless passion beyond the ranks and walls of this building called school ", shares Supriya - a young poet part of Slam Out Loud's programs for the past 4 years. Creative expression has enabled Supriya to #Unmute her voice - and speak her own truth to power.

Slam Out Loud is a non-profit that #Unmutes the voices of children coming from the most difficult places through the transformational power of art and expression. We build in children the Creative Confidence to dream bigger and make those dreams real.

We don’t want to just survive. Through our work, we want to create an immutable case that something as fundamental as finding our voice, discovering ourselves, and finding safe spaces for creativity, should not be limited to a privileged class.

What’s even more exciting? Every rupee you donate to Slam Out Loud via this fundraiser, up to 31,00,000 will be doubled through a matching donation made by our incredible Impact Partners DailyHunt, Dalberg, and Girl Rising, who have shown great belief in our past results and vision for the future.

Supriya comes from a background where dreams are a luxury, but her story isn’t that of disempowerment. Supriya’s story, just like that of Muskan who wants to be a journalist, Abbas an aspiring writer, and Nitish, who wants to play football for an international league is a story of hope, a story of the transformational power of creativity and confidence. A story that’s built on the power of having a VOICE.

BUT

IS THIS OPPORTUNITY TO DREAM A REALITY FOR MOST CHILDREN IN INDIA?   NOT WHEN THEIR VOICES ARE MUTED.

THE PROBLEM:
Children in government schools receive less than 20 hours of art and art-based education each year. There is 1 art teacher for every 1400+ children- which means less than 20 hours of art-based learning for our country's children.
According to the Economic Development Quarterly, children who received art education showed an 80% increase in creativity and levels of social skills. The National Endowment for the Arts observed that students partaking in arts courses had higher grades and were five times more likely to graduate compared to their peers.

Despite compelling evidence, the deprioritization of arts-based learning leaves our children voiceless.

This is where Slam Out Loud comes in, to #UnmuteIndia.

UNLOCKING CREATIVE CONFIDENCE

At SOL, we build creative confidence (life) skills such as Communication, Critical Thinking, and Empathy in children aged 7-17, from disadvantaged communities.

How?

We provide our children with access to art and artistic opportunities in visual and performance arts like Poetry, Storytelling, and Theatre.

By placing talented artists into classrooms and supporting teachers/community leaders to bring art-based learning into communities, our in-person programs reach 50000 children.

Our response to COVID, aimed at bringing well-being and creative outcomes for children through low-tech online interventions has created footprints in 19 countries, reaching over 4.7 million children. This initiative has been now selected as a case study by Harvard, OECD, World Bank Group, and HundrED.

Want more children to find their voice? Here’s where you come in!

Your support will collectively enable us to reach 5 million children over the next year. We want to implement our blended learning approaches for children with very little or no internet access, with customizations to disseminate them through Radio, Television, WhatsApp, IVRS and other print formats - #Unmuting children’s voices and their dreams.

Who are we?

With past experience and knowledge from Teach for India, Piramal Foundation, National University of Singapore, Ashoka University, NMIMS, and Delhi University - our team has the passion, skills, and talent to enable our vision of #Unmuting India - one voice at a time. Meet the team here:
