  • Santa Maria School is located in the village Azadpura which is between Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh and Orchha town, Madhya Pradesh. the villagers have popularised Santa Maria school as the talaiyya wala school due to a perineal pond in the vicinity of the school campus. Azadpura got its name from the brave freedom fighter Chandrashekhar Azad who had spent time near the village in hiding from the British army. Subscribing to the ideology of freedom and liberty that the name of the freedom fighter stands for, the school is popularly known as the Azad School.
  • Standing true to this name, we aim at working facilitating freedom of expression and right to equality and  freedom from discrimination though our inclusive pedagogy.
  • Bundelkhand specially Orchha, therefore has many such stories, folk narratives which is an inseparable part of the people. The school aims to act as a catalyst for such narratives to be shared and culture to be celebrated; and has attempted to emerge as a community school for the people
  • The region comprises of 5 major castes, i.e., Thakur, Yadav, Rajput, Pal, Kumhar and Adivasi. The Pal, Kumhar and even Adivasi are relatively more in number, and this call for actions in the various indicators of development; education being a primary tool.
  • While Orchha, Tikamgarh falling in the Bundelkhand region receives the lowest annual rainfall in the country, several development indicators such as education, sanitation, nutrition are deeply affected.
  •  The idea of an educational institution in this region was conceived to impact some of these indicators through education and by connecting and dialoguing with the community through the realm of a neighbourhood school.
