Support Sushil to feed and educate 1000 slum children

By profession, I am Senior section engineer in Indian Railway posted at New Delhi and I belong to Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh. I started to provide free education to end child labour from my home town when I saw families of many labours under my construction projects.

We all know Ghaziabad is one of the most developing city of India. Construction of high rise buildings, Roads, Bridges etc are in full swing. The working labour class of these project stay in temporary slums. To help these people we started our journey. We have surveyed where ever we can. We have list of 2150 children, who if given chance are ready to go to schools but due to their unfortunate situations and negligence of their parents they are either working in a small age, have become beggars, children who are school dropouts or children who either have never gone to school and working with their parents.

Today I run one center in Gaziabad with 243 children. We provide school education to these children as maximum of them are working so we arrange classes according to their situation - from morning to evening till 9 pm at our centre, so that they can get education while working.

How We Started?  What we are doing?
In 2013 I started preparing students (of economically background) for Gov. job Exams. At starting I had 2 students and thereafter increased to 15. One day, in a get-together with old college friends I shared my work and idea. One of My friends Ms. Taruna Vidhay, (also Done B.tech in computer science from HBTI Kanpur) currently working as Manager In Union Bank of India, also doing the same work and from there we planned to open a proper study centre and expanded our work. With the Name “NIRMAAN” Coaching Sansthan we started our First Free Coaching come Counselling centre for all Ews and Needy Students, in this center we provide free books stationaries, learning material etc.

There after we started providing classes to school dropout/working children too. But with job it is very difficult to both of us. But our students (govt. job asprints) help us and they themselves took part in our cause. In 2015, we registered our Association as Nirbhed Foundation. And today with our volunteers we are providing school education to 3000 students.
Currently we Are running Project “Nirmaan” an  initiative by Nirbhed Foundation.  We provide free course books, notebooks, drawing and craft books, stationery items etc…also provide cloths and make sure they don't fall sick by providing free medical facilities.

Due to their poor family conditions maximum of childrens are not going to school and they work along with their parents and apart from earning they also do home making. This full time tight work schedule repel them from studying. For this problem, we started providing meal system for them. We currently provide one-time meal for 243 children so that they do not skip classes (as their parents go to work and they have to work at home and take care of their siblings etc). Their parents also feel less burdened about their child. But still we have around 1000 more students whom we cannot in the nearby slum whom we cannot afford to feed.

Why we need Fund?
Our campaign aim to provide quality Education, quality Food and to eliminate child labour. Currently my center has 243 children whom we feed one-time meal every day. However, there are around 1000 children in the nearby slum whom we cannot bring in because we do not have the funds to accomodate them. Also, we want to start two-time meals for all these children so that they can concentrate on studying and do not have to work as rag pickers to feed themselves. We need your help to serve 1000 children two-time meal everyday.

Dear Supporters,

Hope you are all are healthy and doing well in this pandemic situation. I Thank of you for your support that you have shown toward our cause. I would first like to share our work highlights with you all:
#We successfully are able to serve approx. 32 lakh meals from COVID-19 Lockdown uptill now. And process is still going on.
# Distributed 48000 litres of packed Juices in more than 3 cities and 50 locations to the poor families to boost their immunity and to keep children immune to diseases and malnutrition.
# As nationwide lockdown has hampered school education. We launched our Project “Mai BHi Hu Shikshak” under which we are providing employment to our elder children who were on a verge to leave education for the sake of  becoming an earning hand for their families.
# We selected 20 elder slum/rural students (class8th ans above) and have been provided employment as teachers under the project.
# We initially implemented M.B.H.S in slums of Ghaziabad and after receiving  positive output, we have now implemented it in various slum/rural locations in U.P and Bihar.
#These young teachers from slums/rural are given all necessary trainings (online& offline) and study/teaching material.
#Classes  from Ist to Vth in slums/rurals (where they live) are being run.
# Education @ doorstep to hundreds of children in the slums/ village of U.P and Bihar.
# We make sure that all the necessary precautions are taken and sufficient availability of Masks, soaps, sanitizers etc.

Situation is still worse for our children as all the educational institutes are still closed. Being daily wagers/ labourers, their parents are facing big challenge in earning and leading their day to day life. Taken into consideration pandemic security measures we are delivering food at their door step so that they remain encouraged to study and their parent won't push them for childlabour. For this, I bought a mini truck through which we are able to take food to slums. And now, along with education at their homes Food is also being served on a daily basis to thousands of families directly in slums.

I already shared in my last few updates that the money received through Milaap have all been utilized in Covid 19 lockdown. Now condition is more than worse in our Bihar centres and we need your support to make it stable. We want to provide food/food material in the villages of Patna and Gaya, Bihar which are still hard to reach are far away from basic necessities.# Need your contineous support.

Dear Well wishers,

We are grateful to you all who have and are supporting us continuously to help the underprivileged. We are  thankful to you as because of you they are finally getting their Fundamental Right i.e. ‘Right to education’. And because of your support we never stopped working, we are able to distribute 18.5 lakhs meals during COVID-19 uptill now.

We all know that Nationwide lockdown due to spread of  Covid-19 pandemic laid a very bad effect on our country specially to the daily wagers and their families. Upon asking their wellbeing and planning to educate their children  in current situation we got a common reply such as :

It (Covid-19 lockdown) did not only take away our earnings but also broke our dreams and created an environment of  fear for our family . It became a matter of survival now. How can even we think about educating our children in this situation when we are not even certain about getting our next meal?

Our children are becoming more mischievous and learning bad habits again, do not stay at home. We are very concerned about our children’s future but are helpless in the given circumstances as cannot send them to school!  We have no option left but to send them to work so that, if not education, they can atleast get proper food. ‘Zinda rahenge to hi to padh payenge’.

These replies shook me and I was worried that children might have forgotten or will soon forget what we have taught them. It took me years to bridge the gap and enroll them to school and finally when the result time was about to come…….the pandemic happened and administration ordered not to open school. Now all the parents are sending their children to work and our years of hardwork is going to get waste. So, I decided that I will not give up. I gathered my team and started to plan.

Hence, after weeks of discussion and thinking, I come up with an idea and I named it “Mai bhi hoon Shikshak” the idea is that if student cannot come to school, we have to take school to the student. It also aimed at aspect of promoting ‘earning with dignity’ by providing salary to every volunteer teacher(Elder students).

"Glimpse of our work

"Glimpse of our work
Under Nirbhed’s  "MAI BHI HOON SHIKSHAK" initiative we aimed to brush up their learning skills basically- reading, writing, recitation along with basic subject learning (English , Hindi, Maths) what they learned prior to pandemic and to keep them in touch with books. so

So, we contacted all the elder children  (of class 7th,8th and 9th) and ask them to continue classes and explained  them that if student cannot come to school, we have to take school to the student at every nook and corners of their area where they live.

All the volunteer teachers will get paid from Nirbhed Foundation with an advance of Rs 3000/- (remaining in month end) to each volunteer upon agreeing on teaching as per our guidelines. We gave them basic training related to maintaining social distancing, hand cleaning, wearing mask  etc. We provided them  white boards, attendance registers, marker and their special ‘TUTOR BAG’ which consist of 2 Markers, Pencils, Sharpeners, rubbers, ball pen, red pen for checking, copies and registers, Tutor Books, syllabus, time table and a watch.

I have also created a watsapp group with those who had a smart phone at home where they daily update us about their classes. We also made our Computer Lab setup to provide online classes to the elder children.
Now classing are running successfully in the slums. Parents are also very happy as it became hard for them to keep their small children inside as jhuggi area are very small and outside they used to play money games and were gaining bad habits. Now, their younger ones are studying and elder ones are earning by education the younger ones. So, they find it a win-win situation.

Food is regularly being served to them 2 times a day. Snacks in morning time and complete meal during afternoon and evening . Our teaching volunteers are also getting taught by us on daily basis through online classes in our labs and through our phones and laptops. Hence, this initiative of ours is getting successful.

Therefore, We need your support in expanding this so that every child get proper education and food.

Dear Well Wishers,
Thankyou very much for your support in this critical time. This is the time where a single helping hand is saving the life of many...
Since the Covid 19 lockdown, we are working day and night and distributed more than 7.5 lakh meals. Please support us here: https://milaap.org/fundraisers/support-nirbhed-feed-daily-wagers

We have given our best, to help not only 2500 families in ghaziabad but hundreds of families in Gaya & Patna, Bihar and Lakhimpur Kheri, Noida (U.P) as well. However, demands are increasing each day from everywhere as its been more than a month they are unemployed and have spent all the savings/credits etc. As lockdown(3)has been extended for 2 more weeks, I am afraid that situation will become worse as most of the areas in which serve are the hotspot of Corona Virus. I request you all to support us so that no one sleeps hungry.

Uptill now 14.00 lakh withdrawn from milaap has been utilized in purchasing essentials and Ration and still more ration and essential items need to be purchased. Our Food Kit are enough to provide:
Two meals per day for every member of the family for a week
Ration kit include/comprise of:
1. Aata/ Rice: min 5 kg each or both
2. Dal : min 2.5 kg to 5 kg
3. Any dry Vegetable  : 2 kg to 5 kg
4. Spices : Salt, chilli, turmeric
5. Oil
6.Packed Juices.
7.Fruits/snacks/biscuits/milk/Bread (time to time basis)
Quantity depends on our survey list (more ration as per the no. of Family members) that we conduct a day or two before the distribution and members in family.
Apart from food we have also distributed packed food kits to travelers and slums such as fruit juices, biscuits, snacks , bread, butter and milk etc. We also feed stray dogs and cows who have no where to eat as all the shops have been shut down.
