Samara was born on 10th February 2010. She was this beautiful bundle of joy. We found later on that she was very quiet and didn’t have her first blabbering sounds like other babies did. We ran a few tests only to be told that she was severe to profound deaf. We also were informed hearing aids will not help, only cochlear implantation was a way to the future for her.
We began our journey of fund raising for her and with a lot of financial debts we had her implanted in 2011 May. It cost us over 19 lakh to have her implanted. It was a long journey to teach her brain to listen and thereby bring about speech. Took many years for her to reach her goals set by her therapists but she did get there eventually. Apart from extra therapy sessions I had to give up my job to help her listen and speak. As being Samara’s caregiver is a 24/7 job. Life came to a standstill and everything revolved around Samara and teaching her to respond to sounds, then small words and finally little sentences. These little milestones brought about immense joy to us. Many moments of pride when she first called me Mama, when she would ask for things she needed instead of using gestures and many more.
Samara is currently using the nucleus 5 external device to help her hear. It’s been 8 years and the company has decided to make this processor she uses obsolete in a years’ time. While raising the initial cost of surgery was hard, we also have a staggering cost of maintenance at least 70,000-1, 00,000 a year. Servicing her processor costs us 45000 rupees each even if it’s a small repair.
The nucleus 7, that has been suggested for her costs 10.9Lakhs for both her processors. To come up with this amount is an impossible task for us. I request for your assistance to help Samara keep hearing. Your contribution will go a long way in helping us to help Samara.
She is a patient of Madras ENT Research Foundation since May 2011. She continues to have her audiograms and mapping done at their centre. Samara is in grade three now and is almost on par with her peers. I request you to help me keep her hearing so she continues this journey just like you and me, enjoying sounds, talking to her loved ones and having a great future ahead.
Little drops of water make a mighty ocean. I have seen miracles in her life before and pray that God is able to grant us this one more. God Bless
