    Baby of Vijaya Kumari

    from Bangalore, Karnataka

Just 8 days ago, Vijaya risked losing her twins and her own life. She was rushed to Bengaluru in an ambulance because her liver and kidneys were failing, but Vijaya had only one thought in mind – that her babies must survive. It was as if in just a few hours, her seemingly healthy body gave up on her. And before she knew it, she was in a critical condition. In the wee hours of the morning, as Vijaya was being wheeled into the ICU, she held Muralidhar’s hand, trying to say something to him.

“I couldn’t understand her properly because she could hardly breathe, but I think she was asking me to save the twins. At that moment, I thought it was all over for us.” - Muralidhar, father

The mother and the babies were in severe distress during delivery – Muralidhar thought he would lose them all

Vijaya was placed on the ventilator and on dialysis before giving birth to her twins. “I thought I would lose them all at that moment,” Muralidhar recalls the dreadful day. Their baby girl and boy were delivered through an emergency c-section surgery but weren’t strong enough to breathe on their own. They were in severe distress and the next 24 hours of their lives were critical – they struggled for every breath.

“I spent all day shuffling between my wife and my babies. I didn’t know if I had the strength to deal with it. But when they started improving the next day, I was slightly relieved. Vijaya hadn’t seen the babies yet and I was eager to tell her that they’re getting better.” - Muralidhar

Muralidhar and Vijaya in happier times

The newborns fought bravely, but now blood infection threatens their life

Vijaya is now slowly recovering in the hospital. While on most days she can hardly sit up without help, she still insists on seeing her babies. However, her babies continue to fight for their lives. They now have an infection in their blood and need to stay in the NICU longer to recover completely. Unfortunately, in the 8 days that they’ve been in the ICU, Muralidhar has spent all his savings and more on their treatment.

“I have a small rented shop in Tiptur where people can get photos framed. Business is not constant, and I earn anywhere between 200-400 in a day. We’ve spent nearly 5 lakhs so far with the help of my friends and relatives. They've supported us a lot, but there’s only so much they can do. Everyone has done everything they could. Now we’re helpless.” - Muralidhar

They can’t save their newborns without your help

Vijaya and Muralidhar are devastated beyond words. The unforeseen circumstances and expenses are a huge burden for them to bear. All they want is for their babies to survive and make it out of the NICU, healthy. But they need to stay for at least 2 weeks to recover. Besides his twins’ treatment, Muralidhar also has to take care of wife’s medical expenses. He just can’t manage on his own.
