Mona's Indian Independence Day fundraiser for Sanitation | Milaap
This is a supporting campaign. Contributions made to this campaign will go towards the main campaign.

I am fundraising to help build toilets in rural India so women can relieve themselves in the privacy and safety of their homes.

Laxmi is a young tailor and a mother of two who lives in T. Puthur, a village in Tamil Nadu. Relieving herself in the open is something she has always done. Yet, that accompanying feeling of fear of attack from was something she could never shake off. With support from GUARDIAN, she was able to construct a toilet at home, and finally, is now able to relieve herself in the privacy of her very own toilet, in the comfort of her home.
There are millions of women in rural India for whom a simple act of relieving themselves is fraught with danger. With no access to toilets at home, they have no choice but to defecate in the open, exposing themselves to risk of molestation, snake bites, not to mention ill-health from unsafe sanitation. has been working in Tamil Nadu, India to provide financing for rural families to build toilets at home. A toilet at home means more than just hygiene; it means safety, opportunity, and dignity. You can help. Lend as little as Rs 500 to help a rural family access safe sanitation and answer the call of our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to help build a clean India.
In rural areas in India, apart from a lack of access to safe sanitation, there is ignorance about the need as well. GUARDIAN has been conducting sanitation workshops which drive home the importance of hygiene and safety. The one-time payment (labor + materials) makes toilet construction cost-prohibitive for most families. GUARDIAN also steps in to lift the financial restriction, allowing families to build a toilet with a loan that they repay in manageable monthly installments. Thanks to this, for thousands of women like Laxmi, a toilet at home is a reality now.
