Roshni’s mission is to empower girls to realize their highest potential by equipping them with the skills, knowledge and resources to break the cycle of poverty.

Only about 20% of Indian girls enroll in higher education due to issues like low awareness, early marriages, financial constraints, and gender disparities. The barriers to underprivileged girls’ entry into the Indian competitive mainstream are their fundamental lack of life skills, employability skills, and self confidence. Roshni develops this large untapped pool of talent by providing them with the skills and tools they need to pursue academic and professional opportunities that empower them to become self-sufficient agents of change in their communities.

Roshni’s training programs are held on the premises of partner government schools/junior colleges for girls of Grade 11 and 12. This two-year program has workshops on communication skills, public speaking, interpersonal skills, conflict management, Spoken English, goal orientation, to name a few.

We have trained over 20,000 girls and 80% of our alumni have broken the cycle of poverty. Founded in 2008 by Ms. Saima Hasan, Roshni has its presence in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Mumbai.

Shaheen is the daughter of a tea stall owner in Old Delhi. Despite being the valedictorian of her class, Shaheen was not sure if she could pursue higher education. She joined Roshni in 2008 and gained skills, awareness and self-confidence to achieve new heights. Today she is a teacher at a MCD school of Delhi (after completing ETE course from Jamia University) and is also simultaneously pursing B.Ed from Jamia University. As a result, she has increased her family's income from Rs.1500 to Rs. 20000 per month, escaped premature arranged marriage, and is on her way to realizing her dreams.

Like Shaheen, thousands of Roshni girls come from economically and socially underprivileged backgrounds, and the majority of them live below the poverty line where gender biases are prevalent. They must overcome social and emotional obstacles before they can begin planning for college and job opportunities.  Roshni equips them with life skills, awareness and resources to achieve stability in their personal lives, which serves as the foundation for future academic and professional progress.

Roshni remains deeply connected to the parents, siblings, teachers, and neighbors that play a pivotal role in the outcome of each girl’s life. Through mothers’ workshops, home visits, teacher seminars, and community campaigns, we actively ensure that every stakeholder remains educated and engaged in the girls’ developmental process.

Your support will enable Roshni to reach out to 1000 girls in communities and junior colleges in Mumbai. We need to raise Rs.10 Lakhs to train 1000 girls for a year.
