“Give a man a Fish and you Feed him for a Day,
Teach a man to Fish & you Feed him for a Lifetime!”
This is my favourite Chinese proverb and only reiterates and strengthens my belief in instilling skills and education in children and youth, that is beyond books – words – grades and which is holistic and life changing. Here at Apni Shala they do exactly that through their Life Skills Education Programmes for children from low-income communities in Mumbai.
Their journey began with three TISS (Tata Institute of Social Sciences) graduates who founded the organization in 2012 at their Deonar campus, and now in a short span of 4 years they have reached over 4000 children with their current staff strength at 13. Their work in this field is commendable and they are now scaling up to new heights with greater reach to marginalized children & communities.
I aim to raise INR 35,000 for this cause through my run in the Mumbai Marathon 2017. The funds received will go towards sustaining life skills education of 62 children in the M-West Ward of Mumbai - a ward with one of the lowest Human Development Indices in the city.
One of the programmes that Apni Shala runs is called the Service Learning Programme
, where they enable children to address social issues in their community. Thus far, children have addressed a variety of issues like alcoholism, waste management, eve teasing, women's education and water management with the guidance of a Facilitator.
Example: children have conducted workshops in their communities to help illiterate women learn how to fill bank forms, learn how to sign and how to tally bills. They have also created a Map of their community marking the areas where eve-teasing is the highest with details like timing etc.Through these processes of learning, children have shown marked improvement in their levels of self-confidence, initiative, teamwork, leadership and empathy.
If like me, you believe that apart from academics, it is essential for children to develop these life skills
, you can contribute with a donation.
I sincerely request your whole-hearted support and best wishes for this campaign and I hope to reach this fund-raising goal soon! :)
