In the last
few decades, India has made tremendous progress in increasing the literacy rate
to 74.04% from 52.2%. 67% of Indian children are going to Government schools
for their education. In a recent survey, it was identified that majority of
(25.96%) children not going to school are girls. These children refuse to go to
schools because of the below reasons
1. Lack of Awareness
2. Safety
3. Lack of Infrastructure
4. Facilities
These are
the 4 major issue causing many to drop from education.
In our
quest to work on these issues, we have identified Shri Shivaji High school, a
54 year old, remotely located school at Village Rajanda in Akola Dist
(Vidarbha, Maharashtra). This school runs the classes from 5th to 12th standard
and has a total of 315 students, 136 girls and 179 boys. The school teachers
along with the help of gram panchayat are making huge efforts to bring
awareness on educating every girl from the village. Unfortunately, due to some
known problems in infrastructure and facilities, the parents are still denying
to send their girls to this school.
The school is calling out for help from generous donors to make changes to the school so the girl strength can be increased and health and safety of students will be addressed. Below are current needs in this school.
1. There is no designated big hall in the school to
have group and cultural activities. Children have to sit out under the
scorching sun (average temperature is 40+ degree) for any group events
2. The school building is also damaged; it has
leakages, broken windows and walls, which rise of safety issues of students and teachers.
3. This school currently does not have HSC
examination center. Girls have to travel to give their exams. There is a big safety concern that is making parents drop the girl children from education before their junior college.
We request
you all to respond generously and donate to renovate and rebuild this historic
school. Each penny of yours will be a show of your generosity and helps
bringing a change in one girl child’s education!
