Mala region (Thrissur District in Kerala) is one of the worst hit areas in the recent flood disaster. There are around 500 families in various regions in and around Mala, that we have identified with the help of local self help groups, as the worst hit by the recent floods.
These families have been selected on the basis that "they cannot rebuild on their own without outside support". We would like to urgently help these families such that their basic necessities of life are restored, and they can focus on earning their daily livelihood.
The relief camps were dispersed in the last week of August. The people have returned to homes where almost everything has been destroyed (mattresses, cooking stoves, utensils, clothes, inner wears etc). Few of these families are still in relief camps, because their houses have been structurally damaged or destroyed rendering it uninhabitable.
They urgently need the following, which we intend to provide on war footing:
1. Mattresses (6x3 ft/6x4ft) - max 2 nos for each family
2. Gas stove
3. Cooking utensils
4. Rice - 5 kgs
5. Wheat - 3 kgs
6. Basic Clothing
Government has promised them maximum help, but as it is, it will take time for the funds to reach the families and the losses are much higher than what the government has promised.
Families are generally depressed, and any intervention or help in this regard will be deeply beneficial for them at this stage.
It will cost around Rs. 5,000 per family to sponsor the above items. Please donate generously. Every little contribution counts. Together we can help many families get back on their feet.:)
