Mohammad Rajaul is a daily-wage work who works more than 2,000 kms from home. His family, consisting of his mother, wife and four children, lives in Kathiar, West Bengal. He visits home once in a few months. He stays far from home just to earn the precious Rs 7,000 that will take care of his family's needs back home.
But the last few visits back home have been fraught with anxiety. He lives with the knowledge that his 5-year-old son has Congenital Heart Disease and is living on borrowed time. Ramjan would be sickly, turning black every time he fell sick.
He was diagnosed as soon as he turned one, but there was no money for surgery. Local doctors prescribed medicine to manage the condition but it was not enough. An acquaintance from the village who also had a heart surgery recommended Vaidehi Hospital in Bangalore. A desperate Mohammad borrowed Rs 80,000 from his family and came to Bangalore seeking a cure.
"My relatives sold their property to give me money for Ramjan. We left our 1-year-old daughter at home because he won't go anywhere without his mother," Mohammad says.
Only after coming to Bangalore, did he realise how much more expensive this trip would turn out to be. They live on rented premises and the money he had borrowed, more than he had ever seen in life, is running out. He had thought that a big amount like Rs 80,000 was sure to cover any surgery.
Ramjan needs a BT Shunt to manage his heart and a closed heart surgery to prevent damage to his organs. The approximate cost of the surgery is Rs Rs. 2,34,000 and there are no more sources left for Mohammad to draw funds from. He realises how measly his income of 7,000 per month really is.
Ramjan needs a surgery at the earliest and with timely s intervention is sure to grow up to become a healthy child. His father is unable to talk about anything but the time for his son ticking away. His mother is inconsolable often crying herself to sleep at night.
