It is with deep regret that we inform you the passing away of Rahul on Tuesday, 26th Dec 2017 at Manipal Hospital, Bangalore. Rahul underwent Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) procedure on 9th Dec with his mother as stem cell donor. He was in post BMT nursing care when he developed post transplant infections due to the suppressed immunity and host defences . Rahul bravely fought and courageously endured the tough battle and also showed signs of recovery. However manifestation of multiple infections was detrimental to post transplant recovery.

Rahul, studying to become an engineer, was first diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) in Jan 2014 when he was just 16-years old. He underwent an 8-month chemotherapy cycle (as per BFM-ALL-90 protocol) and was on Maintenance chemotherapy until Aug 2016.
In Sept 2016, he had a relapse of ALL and was re-inducted into chemotherapy regimen with BFM-REZ-2002 protocol which completed in June 2017.
In July 2017, Rahul was diagnosed with a second relapse of ALL and he is now undergoing intensive chemotherapy. Given his age and positive response to the treatment, Rahul has been advised for Haplo-Identical Bone Marrow Treatment (BMT), as a curative option, with his mother being an HLA-match. While this indeed helps bring down the cost of the treatment, however it is expected that the cost of the complete transplantation treatment is around Indian Rupees INR 30 Lakhs (USD $ 45,800 / GBP £ 35,000).
