Story

This is a story of potential and possibilities. When we entered the low-income government school ecosystem in 2014, we noticed that the children were not prepared for the world that they were about to step into. We saw infinite potential in the children, but barely any possibilities for them to find alternative pathways.
We teach children entrepreneurship using art as a medium. We provide the children with leadership opportunities to serve the communities they come from, and to build a better life for themselves and others around them.
Rachnaakaar is an initiative started by Teach for India Fellows and alums. We aim to build preparedness in children by equipping them with emotional intelligence and 21st century skills like creative and critical thinking, collaboration and communication. This will help the children to thrive in life, personally and professionally. We will do this by providing a complementary rigorous arts curriculum within under resourced government schools. With this visual arts program, children will learn holistically.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?
1)According to India skill report 2017 in the current scenario 60% of the graduate students are unemployable. In 21st century, apart from technical skills, interpersonal and intra-personal skills play an important role to thrive in professional life and achieve excellence at workplace.  
2)Every one out of four students drops out of school due to lack of motivation and interest. This complementary arts curriculum will generate interest and motivation among students, hence reduce the dropout rate.
3)Moreover, the learning in schools is not contextual and the children are not able to connect it to their own real lives. They are unable to apply learnings from their school immediately in their surroundings to help them lead better life. The kids are not equipped to understand and handle/stop disrespectful/abusive/violent behavior. This stops them from dealing with the situation and the aftermath of it. This impacts the children and their community negatively.
There are innumerable benefits of teaching 21st century skills and emotional intelligence. These benefits have a ripple effect. They first start by improving the quality of school life. As the children grow up, they begin to internalize these skills and hence they improve the quality of their lives in every sphere.

HOW ARE WE DOING IT?
We aim to solve the problem by providing the students with trained teachers and an arts curriculum. The curriculum will be rooted in creation of real-time art and design projects by the students, deepening their understanding of self and addressing the problems faced by their communities. This will also build greater sense of responsibility ensuring that the students do their bit towards giving back to their society while learning life skills.
The three phases of the program will be as follows.
Phase 1: Art/Design and Community Projects (for 6th to 8th)- The children will develop and apply their art and design skills to come up with solutions to the problems in their communities and go through self-awareness sessions building emotional intelligence.
Phase 2: Leadership development (9th- 10th)- Children in this phase will help the phase 1 children and at the same time lead their projects independently by applying the previously learnt skills.
Phase 3: Specialized college preparedness (11th and 12th)

OUR PLAN
In the Rachnakar model, the impact will work on two levels, each teacher will work with 60 children, and these children will work with more children through their leadership projects.  
In year 1, we will impact 240 children through 4 art teachers. We will tie up with Art and Design colleges in Pune to recruit paid interns.
In year 2, we will work in 8 schools to impact 800 children, working with 30 art interns.
By year 5 we are looking to work with 30 schools impacting 4500 children through 30 art teachers. Some of these art teachers will be the students from previous batches.
We will create a community of teachers, equip them with the skills and mindsets to provide 21st century skills and build emotional intelligence.
In long term we will work with the schools to integrate the program with the school curriculum. Through this, we aim to take the learning in schools towards being more holistic.
