Who says girls can’t shoulder family responsibilities? I was doing it before I was enrolled and will continue to do it”, argued 15-year-old Bubbly.

Bubbly hails from a village located in Uttar Pradesh. Her father was a police constable. Excessive drinking made him mentally unstable and he committed suicide. Her mother had no plans for sending her to school, until Lal Mohammed from Udaan, contacted Bubbly and sought the opinion of her mother on her education.

Udaan did not just provide education to Bubbly but also taught her a new way to live. Through her social learning classes, she learnt about her rights and responsibilities. As her father was a government servant who died during his service period, one of his educated family members can get a job. Bubbly aspires to serve the police department.

19 years ago, in the Hardoi district of Uttar Pradesh, Sarvodaya Ashram and CARE India joined hands to ensure the education for girls of marginalised groups by implementing Project UDAAN.

Project UDAAN is a residential bridge-building course that provides an opportunity to the never-enrolled or early drop-out adolescent girls to receive a fifth-grade education. Through innovative teaching methods, this accelerated course aims at enabling girls to get mathematic and language skills of grade 5 level in a single year.

Moreover, the teachers in Project UDAAN adopt a holistic approach to learning, using physical activity, dance, music, art and crafts to involve the girls in their own learning. Girls are taught to develop a broader world view and provides a forum for critically examining social issues. Parents and community members are also educated on the value of the girls’ education and the negative impact of early marriage on their livelihood prospects.

Every year a batch of 100 such girls complete the course, after which enrolled to grade 6 in nearby schools. Our proven curriculum has helped several adolescent girls thereby giving flight to their dreams of becoming a teacher, lawyer, doctor or banker.

While every year, until now all expenses were funded by CARE International, this year we are facing an uphill task due to shortage of funds. This is where we are looking for your support to help raise funds for the same.

Now, the question is,

“Will the girls take a flight to their bright future this year?”

The answer? Well, it lies in your hands…
