Help Us In Feeding The Urban Destitute

About Us:
Project Annadanam is an initiative by the Rozi Roti Foundation, a registered Section 8 non-profit based in Hyderabad. The foundation is promoted by a group of professionals who have been involved in various aspects of international development.

The Hunger Problem in urban India:
As international development professionals who have worked across the country and other developing nations, one of the biggest social and developmental challenges that we have seen in India is the prevalent, and underappreciated phenomenon of urban destitution.

Hunger in our cities continues to be a very visible, yet relatively unaddressed problem. The statistics speak for themselves:
  • 20 Crore Indians are undernourished
  • 48% of women of reproductive age and 59% of children under 5 are anemic
  • One in five children under the age of 5 are underweight and two in five are stunted
The Global Hunger Index, 2018 places India 103rd in a list of 119 countries and classifies our country under ‘serious concern’ category. The rank is worse than most of our neighbors including China (25), Sri Lanka (67), Myanmar (68), Nepal (72), and Bangladesh (86), except for Pakistan (106). There is little being done to address the challenge of chronic hunger, especially for those who are most vulnerable.

Project Annadanam was borne out of a resolve to help make a difference, however small, to this dismal state of affairs.

How we address Hunger:
Project Annadanam uses food vans to provide food to the urban destitute. At present, we use one food van to provide 100 meals 6 days a week to the urban destitute in Hyderabad.

We have entered into an agreement with Touch Stone Foundation, an affiliate of Hare Krishna Movement, Hyderabad to provide us packets of cooked food on a cost reimbursement basis. Our van picks up the food from Touch Stone Foundation’s premises and distributes it to the urban destitute who live in the streets and pavements around Gachibowli, Hyderabad.

We started operations on 1st March 2018 and have distributed 18,732 meals as of November 30, 2018.
How we plan to utilize our funds:
We plan to increase the food packets distributed from 100 a day to 200 a day, staring Jan 2019. The funds we request would go towards food procurement and distribution costs for one year, from January to December 2019. The detailed allocation of estimated costs is provided below:

SL NoCost headAmount
1Food procurement cost (estimated for 200 meals a day at Rs.25 per meal for one year)1,890,000
2Food packaging cost (estimated for 200 meals a day at Rs.5 per meal for one year)360,000
3Salaries (estimated for one van driver for a year)180,000
4Fuel cost70,000

Total2,500,000

Dear Friends,

Thank you all for contributing to our fundraising campaign and helping us address hunger in our streets. The funds raised will help keep us going for another year.

However, we would be unable to scale the number of meals we distribute to 200 since we were unable to raise adequate funds.

We will keep fundraising and as and when we are able to raise adequate funds, we will increase the number of meals we distribute.

Thanks and Regards,
Denny George

Dear Supporters,

Thank you for the support given!

Presently due to shortage of funds, we are still feeding around 100 people per day. If we raise more funds soon, we plan to extend it to 200 plus meals  a day. Also, we plan to push the project forward in the month of February to boost the campaign to raise more funds.

We request you to kindly contribute and  share the campaign so that we could raise more funds and extend our project to more number of meals.

Regards,
Denny

The funds we've raised so far along with our reserves is sufficient for us to continue our operations at the current level (100 meals distributed to the urban destitute daily) for a further three months.

However, it falls short of our targets to increase the distribution to 200 meals per day.

We have decided to let the campaign continue for a further couple of months to enable us to meet our targets. This will in turn help us address hunger in our cities.
