    Menstrual Hygiene For Underprivileged Women

    from New Delhi, Delhi

Story

Hello there!
My name is Pratham Jain.
Menstrual Hygiene
My name is Pratham and I am a student of class XII in St. Columba’s School, New Delhi.  Currently, I divide my time between school, tuitions and helping my mom at our shop. I aspire to work hard like my dad used to and make mom proud of me.
I chose the cause of ‘Menstrual Hygiene’ because I feel that it is very important for the health and dignity of women and the overall development of society. I have observed the taboo around menstruation in my own family and I want it to be normalized and discussed in a dignified manner. According to a report by the NGO Dasra titled ‘Spot On’ in 2014, 70% of women in India say their family cannot afford to buy sanitary pads. These dreadful statistics point towards a grave issue that hinders and hampers women’s health, mobility and confidence. Poor menstrual hygiene practices like using dirty cloth old cloth, rags, hay, sand, or ash to absorb blood and absence of clean toilets with proper water supply increase the likelihood of infections and diseases among women. Many young girls either miss school or drop out of it altogether due to lack of proper menstrual hygiene management.
I want to promote menstrual hygiene among women by providing information on menstrual hygiene and sanitary products to women in my community.  I can begin by having a dignified and empathetic attitude towards women and be cognizant of the various challenges they face due to menstruation and the taboos around it. I share with my friends and relatives the efforts of various organisations like Menstrupedia that has designed and developed a comic book on menstruation adapted to the local context to provide awareness and education on MHM to adolescent girls and about other govt. and non-govt. organisations working to promote better menstrual hygiene.
I feel that we should work as a community to overcome this problem. All schools should ensure the provision of health education to girls and women on menstruation, menstrual hygiene and its management using safe sanitary products so that they feel confident and comfortable about their bodies. Increasing community access to clean toilets with water, both at home and in schools should be a top priority for all govt. and non-govt. agencies associated with sanitation. Contributing to NGOs like Hamari Pahchan that promote the availability and use of sanitary products and enable safe disposal of sanitary products can also help us in improving menstrual hygiene management. At the grassroot level, I feel that we can engage in distribution and awareness drives about proper menstrual hygiene management, especially in rural areas where awareness about the topic is low. Most importantly, I feel that we need to overhaul the attitude towards menstruation as being something impure and taboo to being something natural and normal.
WE ARE PLANNING TO DISTRIBUTE AROUND 50K SUKHAD KITS TO UNDERPRIVILEGED WOMEN throughout the year.
Per kit price:
Sukhad kit for 1 woman = Rs. 1,400/-
