“We suddenly saw our house walls caving in. Heavy shower accompanied the gusty wind. My parents were busy saving the household valuables. I wanted to save my school bag which had all my books and copies. When I rushed to pull it out it was already under a pile of debris,” said Lakshmi who wants to go back to school as soon as possible.
We met Lakshmi and her brother in one of the shelter centres in Puri district of Odisha, one of the worst hit areas due to the cyclone Fani. Like Lakshmi, there were hundred other kids who flocked around us thinking if we were there to give them back their text books or any educational materials.
Why they need you
While the government and the civil society organisations have been struggling to mitigate the impact of the devastating Cyclone Fani through distribution of food and non food materials, the children who often face the biggest psycho social impacts due to natural disasters are often neglected.
According to a report published by the Princeton university, the impacts of natural disasters on children are much beyond damages to physical health which can be addressed through immediate medical services.
Not only are disasters themselves stressful and frightening, but children can suffer psychological harm from the damage to their homes and possessions; from migration; from the grief of losing loved ones; from seeing parents or caregivers undergo stress; from neglect and abuse; and from breakdowns in social networks, neighborhoods, and local economies.
Disasters can also interrupt children’s education by displacing families, destroying schools, and pushing children into the labor force to help their families make ends meet in strained times. Cyclone Fani has damaged more than 5791 school buildings in the state of Odisha.

We in consultation with the school authorities are distributing educational kits to the students of primary and secondary classes. Each kit contains essentials like school bag, notebooks, geometry boxes, pens and pencils, crayons and 10 other items. These kits will ensure the following:
1. Fresh start of education at every individual level
2. A box of new stationeries will give the kids the joy and hope which will neutralize the trauma they have gone through
3. Ensure that individual academic processes are not hit in the aftermath of the disaster
4. Reduce the pressure on Cyclone affected parents to supply educational supplies to their children right away. They can choose to invest in the basic essentials for the families
And above all these kits will ensure the children to smile and look forward to a better tomorrow.

PaperBoat Foundation is a non charitable organization based out of Bhubaneswar Odisha, which works in the educational sector. We are a group of young individuals trying our best to help the affected children recover from the trauma that they have gone through. We have already raised INR 2 Lakh from our acquaintances but we need more support to reach out to more number of schools and children in need.
