Tucked away in the slums of Vasant Kunj, New Delhi,  Nai Disha Educational and Cultural Society, a registered NGO since 2005 has been working selflessly for the less privileged, by providing a means to uplift children belonging to migrant communities through free education and skill-building as part of becoming self-reliant.

Migrant families belong to the economically weaker and backward groups in society. They have come to Delhi from small villages and towns in search of jobs to earn a livelihood. Majority of them are illiterate with limited possibilities in a higher vocation where they end up as daily wage earners and other such low paying jobs. Besides this, they live in depravation and are incredibly vulnerable to social and economic changes, usually from not having acceptable identity documents. The recent lockdown has added to depriving these migrants of being able to earn any money and are unable to feed their families over these coming weeks.

Nai Disha's Appeal
Why do we need to feed them during this Lockdown period?
95 % of the parents engaged with are daily wage earners such as masons, labourers, plumbers, electricians, gardeners, drivers, domestic helpers etc.
Today they are not able to work to feed their families. These people are at risk of dying due to hunger. Due to the lockdown, they are not able to travel home to their villages and remain mentally, psychosocial and emotionally drained due to this lockdown.

As food provided by the government is not reaching many of the migrant populations effectively, there is a legitimate need to help at least the ones who can be contacted. These are the families of the 450 children that are associated with Nai Disha's school in Vasant Kunj.

There is a need to do "our bit by providing relief to the families and neighbours of these impoverished children we cater to through our education programs as an add on service." And this is where the funds are most needed said their spokesperson.

It is essential that in these trying times,  the community who are privileged show solidarity and donate generously to help the marginalized in dire need.

Nai Disha through its "Feed the Needy Program" is on a mission to help the migrant community that they specifically engage with (but not limited to) in the area of Vasant Kunj, by providing these destitute families with dry food supplies. The campaign launched is to help raise funds for food distribution to 1000 people or more as often as can be done.

We at the Rotary Club of Delhi Garden City are reaching out to many through members and others so that we can support  Nai Disha's efforts in raising enough money to support the children they engage with and their families with the provision of food hampers.

How is Nai Disha doing this?
The food packet given to an average family of four and can help them survive for a month. One food packet contains Flour, Rice, Pulses, Sugar, Spices, Oil, Onions, Potatoes and soap. Each food packet has budgeted at Rs. 1100 (under $20 for approximately a month and 1 dollar roughly a day)

How can you help?
The money raised will be used to support 1000 for approximately a month and prevent hunger!

The Nai Disha team is also helping in the following ways to enhance the food program in the following ways:
1. By being in contact with 450 children who are attached to their school in Vasant Kunj by enquiring about their safety, well-being, food, and ration needs for their families
2. By contacting the children, they engage with twice a week to mentor and counsel them and making them aware of government facilities and schemes that can help them wherever possible.
3. By sensitizing the children, they engage with about Coronavirus and the importance of staying at home, wearing a mask, washing hands and maintaining social distancing.
4. By helping their needy children with dry ration packets and medical support during these difficult times

They have also mobilized their Women Empowerment program by making masks and distributing them free of cost in the community once they are ready with the food packets.

Please donate towards this noble cause and join the fight against Coronavirus and help to bring back the smiles on people dependent on us once again!! Rest Assured, all the money donated through this campaign will be going towards Nai Disha's effort for "Feed the Needy"
