In the past 1 year of fighting Covid-19, many have put on their capes and helped the needy and saved lives. Along with them was a team of heroes with crutches, wheelchairs and unbreakable spirits. Team Mitti Cafe have been serving the underprivileged over the past 1 year in a relentless effort to fight Covid-19.

MITTI Cafe was started by Alina Alam, for the economic independence and dignity of persons with disability, by providing training, employment, and entrepreneurship opportunities for adults with intellectual, physical, and psychiatric disabilities through the creation of cafes within institutional spaces. A platform for persons with disability to showcase their abundant potential for productive activity and create awareness for the cause of equal opportunities in employment.

 

In 2020, the COVID 19 crisis had led to all their Cafes being shut and they were left with no income to support their 100+ employees with disabilities. As things started to look blurry, something happened. Through a Milaap fundraising campaign, 1000s of people came forward and supported them, which helped these wonderful humans and their families stay afloat.


Having received such incredible support from people, the team wanted to do the same for others in distress. They decided to do what they do best. They started to cook and feed the needy. During the first wave of Covid-19, they served over 1.3 million meals to various communities who were hit by the pandemic.

Now, with the second wave of Covid-19, their battle got more difficult. With a surge in the number of people in need of food and oxygen, the team is doing everything in their power to help them. Their kitchens keep running which helps them distribute over 3000 meals every single day. They also provide Oxygen cylinders to the poor at home.

With the country in it's worst ever fight against Covid-19, these wonderful humans are once again proving that all it takes to help others is the sheer will to do so.
