On the path to educational equity

"Education is the most powerful weapon that you can use to change the world"

The Truth about India's crisis-
The truth is that today, more than 50% of students in Grade 5 cannot read a Grade 2 text or solve a simple subtraction problem. The truth is that today, the socio-economic circumstances that a child is born into determines the type of school she attends, the kinds of co-curricular opportunities that are available to her, the quality of life outcomes she attains as an adult, and the kinds of opportunities she passes on to her own children.

My organization-Teach for India-
Teach For India believes that one day every child will attain an excellent education. It is on a mission to build a movement of leaders to eliminate educational inequity. TFI recruits college graduates and working professionals for a 2 year fellowship program and places them in low income schools, to teach full time, for two years.

My school-
I teach 20 talented kids studying in Grade 4 in Government Urdu Higher Primary school located in Rajendranagar. Just like many other low income schools in India my school lacks many basic things that every school needs. Everyday is a challenge as I ask myself- how do I provide these children with an excellent education with the limited time and resources that I have?
With your help these children can achieve their dreams and find their light.

The funds required-

1.  Infrastructural issues- Our library room and store room has major flooring issues which leads to water logging on a regular basis especially when it rains. Our school is also heavily infested with mosquitoes which makes it difficult for our children to sit through classes. The school requires heavy fumigation and installation of meshes on all the windows. Our toilets also need some repair work and clean water supply.

2. Utensils-Many of my students go through the whole day of school without food and milk as they don't have plastic boxes, plates and tumblers to carry to school for their mid day meals and free milk that the government provides.

3. Classroom supplies- This includes story books for a classroom library, basic stationery such as notebooks, pencils, crayons and board games that help students learn the content in fun and exciting ways

4.  Printing work- Providing students with worksheets, workbooks reading material and assessments on a daily basis is an expensive affair

5.  Sports equipment- I strongly believe that children can learn values like teamwork, grit and self control through sports. It will also provide them a healthy outlet for their energy and enthusiasm and lead to better outcomes in class

6. Field trips- Most of my kids are not aware of the world that exists beyond their community as they rarely get an opportunity to step outside. Day trips to the planetarium, museums, monuments, higher educational institutions and parks will help provide them with an exposure to the outside world

7. Projector and screen- Displaying videos, images and presentations will help enhance the learning experience for children

Through your contribution we could help these kids achieve their dreams and become better human beings. Any contribution, be it small or big, could help put these children on a different life path. Together we can tackle India's educational crisis and build a better nation.
