#WalkofJoyIndia 6,000km for victims of India's farmer suicide crisis.

Nomadic Lion's Walk of Joy is a 6,000km walk from Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, all the way up to Amritsar Panjab. A walk to share joy and happiness and help the victims of the farmer suicide crisis, through the Rescue A Family project.

Walk of Joy India

During the walk that starts on 15th July 2017, Nomadic Lion will stop and talk to farmers and NGOs to raise awareness about sustainable agriculture and to connect farmers direct to consumers.  The walk that starts from Kanyakumari will take 10 months and will cross 13 states from South to North, finishing in Amritsar, Panjab in May 2018.

The Walk of Joy India, which aims “to share happiness and joy with all” is being co-organised by international NGO UNITED SIKHS and local Media organization, The Better India.

Nomadic Lion will be raising awareness as they progress on the walk via their website, social media activities and engaging local people from village to village, documenting the current condition of farmers in India today.

They have already successfully completed 3 walks covering 3 countries; Malaysia, Brunei and the UK, covering a total distance of 3650km.

For Walk of Joy India, they have mapped out a two part route that will take them from South to North and from East to West. They will be walking through Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharasthra, Gujarat and finally finishing the first 5 month section in Ajmer, Rajasthan in December 2017. They will start again in January 2018 in Kolkata walking all the way across to Amritsar via Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Panjab.

Rescue A Family

The Rescue A Family project is aiming to give pensions of Rs. 1000 per month to widows of farmer suicides on the condition that their children stay in education. Rescue A Family together with Walk of Joy are targeting to raise Rs. 9,600,000 (96 Lakhs) providing 200 widows with a guaranteed pension of Rs. 1000 for at least the next 4 years.

Pensions will be given to farmer suicide widows in the states where the funds are raised during the walk.

At present, 170 farmer suicide widows in Panjab receive a  monthly pension of Rs 1000 through the Rescue A Family project.

How the donations help

  • This pension is paid to widow families with school going children to ensure that their education continues.
  • This pension ensure that the child is not used as child labour to provide income for the family.
  • In the first week of each month the farmer suicide widow receives into her bank account Rs. 1000.
  • The monthly pension will be for paid for at least 4 years.
  • The pension may be extended beyond 4 years to meet the requirements of the family in need, through further fundraising.
  • The Rescue A Family team follows up with each family at least once a year to check on the welfare of the family and the progress of the pension scheme.

Over the 4 year period, each widow will receive a total pension of Rs. 48,000.

Total amount per month = Rs. 1,000
Total amount per year = Rs. 12,000
Total amount per 4 years =  Rs. 48,000

5% Administration costs per Pension (B):

Total amount per month = Rs. 50
Total amount per year = Rs. 600
Total amount per 4 years =  Rs. 2,400

Rs. 48,000 + Rs. 2,400 (A + B) = Rs. 50,400 (C)

Each time Rs. 50,400 is raised by Walk of Joy India we are able to support one farmer suicide widow's pension.

Cost for 200 Pensions (C) x 50,400 = Rs 10,080,000 ( Rs 1.08 Crore)

We are aiming to raise a total of Rs.10,000,000 (1 Crore) to support 200 farmer suicide widow pension for 4 years.

Dear Supporters and Donors,
Thank you all for your valuable donations in support of the farmers .
The walk of Joy India led by Nomadic Lion and supported by UNITED SIKHS and The Better India are meeting the farmers of Kerala and collecting smiles for their MillionSmiles campaign. Representatives of organisations like Youth Cultural Development Academy and Dev Ratan Trust, who are endeavoring to spread the knowledge of organic farming right from the school level are also walking in support of farmers across the country.  The walkers have visited an award winning organic farmer, Mr. Subramainan in Thrissur District and also Mr. Ajith Kumar, who has created a true food forest of abundance in Kerala.
For next four days, they would be visiting the farmers in Wayanad and connecting them with the NGOs working in support of the farmers.
Kindly spread the message as much as possible through your network.
