Second life for Anup

My husband Anup is 44 years old with no pre disease, non smoker, non alcoholic, needs urgent lungs transplant. He is the only earner in the family with wife and two kids, who are in class 10 and 1. He runs a small consulting firm and his five full-time  employees and their facilities are financially dependent on his quick recovery.

Coming from a small village of West Bengal, he always wanted to do something good in life, so that he can help his extended family, friends and the villagers in need. With all the blessing and love of all his well-wishers, he was the first student to crack JEE examination from his village, and successfully completed Civil Engineering from Bengal Engineering College which is one of the most prestigious college in West Bengal. After few years of working in a big construction company, he left his job and started his own company with the motto of creating jobs for others. He helped and trained many people from his village and improved their employability. He regularly donates in community activities and to the people in need. He is a well known personality in the local community for his generosity and helping nature.

Unfortunately, on 15-Sep-2020, he was admitted in ICU in CMRI, Kolkata after contracting COVID. He was given all possible COVID medications there. Although he finally became COVID negative after 45 days, he developed irreversible Lung Fibrosis. Both his lungs have been permanently damaged. For further treatment, he was shifted to Frotis Hospital, Kolkata, but after 15 days of treatment, doctors confirmed that the lung condition is deteriorating and only option left is the lung transplant. This is a very expensive treatment, and we do not have financial capacity to go for this option. So, it's our earnest request to all of you to extent your help.

The estimated cost for this operation is roughly 1 crore at MGM Chennai. Transfer by air ambulance is 15 lakh, Pre-operation waiting time with ventilator or ECMO support is 40 lakh. Operation cost is 30 lakh and another 15 lakh for post surgery treatment.

Till date we have already spent 20 lakh and hoping to be able to arrange another 40 lakh by collating the last penny we have in savings and selling all our assets. However, we still have 60 lakh of shortfall.

Doctors confirmed that once this operation is successful, the patient will be able to come back to normal life. So, please please help us in whatever way possible to give him a new life.

Dear Supporters,

Few days ago, there was an organ alert, for which few recipients were being made ready in the hospital, Anup was one of them. However, doctors rejected the option with that donor’s lung for reasons. So, now we have to continue waiting for the next availability.

Earlier this week, Anup developed some issues with few health parameters like haemoglobin decreased, creatinine increased; as a result he was sleeping most of the time, had dizziness, wasn’t talking or eating properly. He also had some cough & cold, so doctors gave him some medicines for that. Also, the doctors assured that he is being continuously monitored and necessary actions would be taken as required. Certain medicines have been reduced to control creatinine and Ryles tube is currently being used to maintain necessary food intake.

On the mental health side, lately Anup is getting very much restless, understandably, after 65 days of Hospital stay in ICU beds. Apart from the family members, few of his friends have also spoke to him and tried their best to keep him energised, strong, positive and focused. Though it's not easy for him, he is fighting hard and kept the hope to win this battle successfully. All we can provide him is the confidence that all of us are with him and he will get well soon.

On the campaign and fund raising side, things have been slowed down a bit and we are stuck at 40L mark. We do not have much time left as he may need to undergo the surgery at anytime. So, it’s my earnest request to all of you to continue with your support by means of additional donations if possible, shares and prayers.

With Regards,
Sudipta

Dear Supporters,

We have got a confirmation from the treating doctors at MGM hospital that Anup's name is at the 2nd position on the waiting list in the hospital for Dual Lungs for O+ blood group. Since, this register is maintained by the Govt and there are other patients waiting in other hospitals as well, we are expecting the suitable lung for Anup to be available in 4-6 weeks time.

The pipe which was kept after ICD operation has now been removed and Anup is doing good without that. However, he developed a bit problem with bowl movement, so, on request, doctors permitted him to take home-made food. Anup has taken food by himself and finished the home-made meals. This is a good news as we could also avoid the need for Ryles tube.

Doctor explained why physiotherapy is important. All joints need to be kept active and thus movement is needed in hands & legs. This is quite important even for quick recovery post-surgery. Also, physiotherapy helps in slowing down further damage to his own lungs which is only 5% working at the moment.

Doctor mentioned, overall Anup is doing good, stable, and also not much problem in neuro or other organs. So, it is expected that he will be ready for transplantation as soon as the lungs are available.

On the fund raising part, we are so thankful & grateful to all the well-wishers around the world, majority of whom do not even know Anup. Humanity is powerful enough to make Anup a blessed person.

We still have a long way to reach the target amount. As Milaap campaign shows, we are yet to reach our target. So, please continue showering your blessings & support to Anup & Family and keep him in your prayers.

Best regards.

Dear Supporters,

Let me give you a quick update on Anup's condition. Anup is currently 'clinically stable' and maintaining 90% saturation with 70% oxygen support. However, due to sudden development of Pneumothoraces, yesterday, doctors needed to perform intercostal drain insertion with local anaesthesia. An intercostal drain (also known as a chest drain or pleural drain) is a flexible plastic tube that is inserted through the chest wall into the pleural space. It is used to drain pneumothoraces or effusions from the intrathoracic space.

Yesterday, also the registration under TRANSTAN portal was done applying for the lungs donation/transplantation. It will follow the defined process to move through current wait list based on blood group and other matching parameters.

Next step is to ensure that he maintains the stable condition and does not develop any other complications until the time the transplant is done. We will keep posting updates here and request you all to continue showering your blessings for Anup and help us spread the appeal.

Best regards.
