Mobile phones are an essential livelihood support and connectivity device in rural India, with higher penetration than land-line phones. With inconsistent & insufficient power supply, phone charging is a problem in rural India and is a need-gap. Consumers with limited / poor access to power are willing to pay for it. mPowerpad solar charger, designed and manufactured by Third Wave Power is the right solution for this need and can be deployed as a pay-per-use solution delivered by Village Level Entrepreneurs (VLEs) for a fee for full charge per phone. mPowerpad can charge 5-7 phones per day in one day’s solar exposure. This service helps a VLE earn extra income while delivering a much needed service in remote locations. To scale this model, we are running a limited location test marketing exercise where mPowerpad has to be deployed through VLEs. Recruitment of VLEs will be done through Social Enterprises. Over a course of time, the project outcome will be studied and the learnings will be used to tweak the service/ business model/ product as needed. The funds from the donors would go towards subsidizing the cost of the mPowerpad to VLEs.
