Hello!
I have planned something interesting to do this new year and I hope you will JOIN me too!
Coming from a strong background of engineering, management and now in banking, I had access to the best education in India. Academic excellence has always been a front runner in India but the social and emotional development of children remains the neglected bit. Especially for children coming from low income communities. they tend to pick up negative attitudes and behaviors from the environment around them.
Hence, I am working towards building "Great Citizens in Little Children".
How am I doing this?
By supporting the initiative called "Apni SHala" in India.
Started by a team of engineers, entrepreneurs and psychologists, Apni Shala a registered organisation, engages "Children from low income communities in real world experiences that help them discover the best within them".
How awesome is that!
-------------------------------------------------------THE CAUSE----------------------------------------------------------------
Apni Shala goes beyond ‘academic knowledge’ and focuses on building interpersonal skills, emotion management and critical thinking skills in children. To do this, they engage children in experiential learning programs like community project work that has them going out into the real world, critically analyzing social problems and implementing solutions in the real world!
Their approach to such ‘life skill’ education is that instead of preachy moral science texts (like you probably had in school!) we make things more practical for them so that they’re always challenging themselves to problem-solve, make healthy decisions, build better relationships and work towards a positive goal!
How do children benefit from this? Experiences lead to self-discovery! Today, 70% of children engage in finding solutions to negative behavior in their everyday life. They are also better at:
• Critically analysing and resolving a tough situation in their daily lives and in society
• Taking initiative to solve problems around them
• Evaluating their value systems
But what do children feel about it?
"I would have never thought I could go out and do a research in my community. I am so happy today"- Simran. 12 years, Govandi Municipal School

OUTREACH:
Apni Shala has reached to around 1100 children in two years through its year long school programs and 400 children through its short term workshops. It is working at 10 different locations in Mumbai with government schools and 5 partner NGOs.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SUPPORT FOR CHANGE:
I am aiming to give 2 more classrooms from government school in Mumbai access to Apni Shala
A full year of Apni Shala programs to a child takes only $25. 80% will go towards facilitator fees, material in classrooms and content development. 20% will go towards monitoring & evaluation and capacity building of facilitators.
# $25 ensures full year Life Skills program for a child
# $50, Yes, Life skills program for 2 children!
And YOU can just keep adding more! Help me take this number to 100 CHILDREN!
Apart from this any contribution, in any denomination will help us to increase the outreach of our program.
START YOUR CAMPAIGN to give access to life skills sessions to more children!
