INTRODUCTION:
I am Meelan Rath (Age- 40; F), from Baramunda, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. I live with my parents.
Me and my mother have been feeding around 50-70 stray dogs of my area for over a decade. We also feed 30-35 cats at our house. We take special care for dogs who are injured or ill and also puppies. My mother is an old member of People-for-animals.We would not have missed a day without feeding or taking care of stray dogs in past all these years.
Many a times people in our area oppose feeding dogs, but we rebel for our speech-less stray dogs. We have a natural instinct for animals that keeps us on toes all day.
WHAT WE FEED & ITS SOURCE:
We feed our dogs with boiled rice mixed with boiled fish & chicken wastes, and for cats we feed small fish, boiled rice and boiled milk.
I fetch fish and chicken wastes from the market thrice a week, bringing almost 5kg each time, and have to pay certain tips to vendors. We bring 100kg cheap rice each month, 3-4 kg small fish each week and almost 2 ltrs milk every day.
Recently I have been trying to source kitchen wastes of hotels and dhabas for my dogs.
All spends are from our own pocket till date.
TREATMENT FOR STRAY DOGS:
I can make out if the dog is ill, sometimes I drag them from drains (as dogs start hiding if they are ill), and start giving treatment.
I used to take dogs to nearby veterinary hospital, but by now I almost do it myself, unless its an emergency.
For Eg. In case of injuries I mix 1/6 tablet of droxil with doggy food which relieves pain, similarly I use small portion of advanced-crocin for minor illness etc. This works for dogs and is cheap.
For new born and small puppies I try as much to give preventive injection which will save them from deadly diseases like distemper.
I keep ill doggy and puppies at my house, although my house is cramped for space.
Animal Birth Control: Our municipality sometimes picks-up dogs for sterilization who are younger than 1 year, which is against rules and relocates them after operation, which is against law. I protest - but in vein.
MY AIM & MY NEED
Given a chance I would feed all stray dogs of Bhubaneswar city, However in the meanwhile my mother is growing older and my efforts are getting extreme to carry out daily routine. Financial constraints is now a huge blow on my wishes. To keep up my endeavor and expand, I need the following:
## A rented room for caring puppies, hurt and ill stray dogs.
## Atleast 1 paid manpower and other motivated volenteers (difficult to get voulenteers).
## Tips to be paid to fish/chicken vendors and hotel dhaba staff.
## Procuring cheap rice.
## Procuring milk and small fish (for cats).
## Cooking gas expenses.
## Vehicle travell expenses for collection and other dog related purposes.
## Treatment and preventive medicines.
Your small contribution will keep me running around for stray dogs.
