Help Dr. Abhijit Treat Beggars for Free

Dr. Abhijit Sonawane and his wife Dr. Manisha Sonawane are working together to bring medicine to the most deprived group of individuals in Pune, India. Under their organization, Soham Trust, these doctors for beggars treat individuals that do not have financial means for medical treatments. “We provide all the basic health care and investigations on [the] road itself to the elder beggars, who are abandoned by their families and who are begging just to survive in this world,” says Dr. Abhijit.

Every morning, Dr. Abhijit heads out to various locations such as temples, mosques and churches where a majority of homeless seniors assemble to seek donations. He carries with him two bags full of medicine, conducts check-ups, and provides free medicine to those that are in need. “To attain this objective, we daily visit to Mandir, Mosque and Church during 10:00-4:00pm and interact with beggars, carry out medical check-up and provide all other related medical services,” he says.

Dr. Abhijit not only assists with medical and emotional support, but also provides counselling to the homeless seniors so they can start their own businesses. “We create a relationship with them as their family member. Once we build the rapport with them, we start counselling and convincing them to leave this begging trade,” Dr. Abhijit says and adds, “We are proud to say that since April 2017, we have supported 49 elder beggars to leave the begging trade.” A total of 1100 homeless individuals registered with Dr. Abhijit are receiving medical support. “But, provision of health care is not our objective, our mission is to reach up to their heart.... by using this path.”

In addition, he says their goal is to make these individuals self-sufficient. A total of 160 cataract operations have been conducted by Dr. Abhijit and his wife. When medical care cannot be provided on the road, Dr. Abhijit relocates them to a public or private hospital.

Dr. Manisha Sonawane plays a crucial role in the operation of the organization. While Dr. Abhijit dedicates his daily routine to the service of those that are not financially independent, his wife operates a clinic where a majority of their financial support comes from. “People ask us, how we survive. The answer is, we have one small clinic which is run by my wife.” he says.

Dr. Abhijit and Dr. Manisha need your help to provide better medical care to their extended family of 1100 beggars. Funds are required for the following expenses:
- Cost of medicines disbursed for free everyday to the beggars
- Financial support to beggars to start working on their own once rehabilitated.
- Cost of surgeries for cataract patients
- Cost of shifting the really old beggars to paid old age homes.
- Cost of other medical diagnostics and surgeries which cannot be performed on the streets.

Your support will ensure Dr. Abhijit and Dr. Manisha can continue to provide free medical care to the beggars.

Dear Supporters,
Thank for your love and support, Here are the updates of our latest activities
Shri Sant Gadge Baba was the great hero of 19th century and known for his social services.

He was a holy saint who worked for helpless and poor.

Gadge Baba traveled from one place to another place wearing his food pan upturned on his head and carrying his trademark broom.

When he enters in a village, instantly starts cleaning the gutters and roads of village.

He also helped beggars and destitute by his own way.

He is real inspiration for me.

Based on his teaching, now onwards we are also going to set up a group of beggars who would clean roads and other sites of the community.

We will pay daily honorarium to this group from the donation that we are getting.

Proposed outcome of this activity:

1.     Each one of them will get a guarantee that each one of them will get definite amount.

This guarantee may distract them from begging.

2.     They themselves will realize the need of sanitization.

3.     General people of society may get motivated, by seeing elder beggars cleaning roads.

4. Provision of medical services to beggars is going on. (Number of beneficiaries are less due to lockdown)

5. Providing grocery, to needies. Who have no other source to feed their family members.

6. Will deposit school fees for children of beggars, upon reopening of school.

7. Will start community cleanliness through elder beggars after lockdown period.

Starting this program with your blessings, as soon as the lockdown period get over.

Dear Supporters,
Thank you for your support and hearty donations,

On a day, when I heard about Corona case found in India, it was obvious thought that, it will now definitely reach to Maharashtra !

This is a fact that Beggars and destitute are most vulnerable group, who can carry this virus for long duration.

Hence from that day discussed with experts and under guidance of WHO site, started taking following steps in initial phase itself.

1. Organised one to one interactions with this group and oriented on DOs and DONTs. Covered almost 1000 beggars and destitute approx.

Now they are fully aware about precautions to be taken.

2. Given face masks / handkerchief / sanitizers and soaps to all of them.

Given various tonics to improve immunity, B Complex and Iron along with other medicines.

3. Those who have shelters, at least even in slums, requested / suggested them to stay inside. This has prevented them to become virus carrier.

4. Those who dont have even shelter in slums also, given various medicines and materials to them so as to fight in given conditions.

Relocation of such peoples to other shelter homes  is not possible for me due to fact that I do not possess such facility with me, and do not have control on those, who have this facility !

5. One should not struggle for food in this situation. With this thought helped economically to few to take grocery , given grocery material to many.

Presently, nobody is seen  on roads and I work on road itself, hence speed of my work is lowered down.

But still, all the measures have taken long back as per my capacity.

Whatever I have done /doing was not possible without you !

One Ajji has given blessings to all of you, sharing these blessinngs !

Dear Supporters,

Thank you for all the support that you have provided us. We are overwhelmed. As we all know, due to Corona Virus, the situation is getting a little worse everyday. People on the street are in need of sanitizers to be able to cope with this situation as water facilities are limited in most of these areas. Hoping we all recover through this.

Please keep supporting.
