I am running to give 67 children life skills education

Hi everyone,

In the fast-paced world of today, it is common knowledge that having theoretical knowledge, while valuable, is just not enough. We all need practical skills to survive and make the most of our talents. And the work that Apni Shala is doing strives to achieve just that.

Working with students across standards 4th to 9th, Apni Shala’s aim is to foster critical thinking skills, confidence, empathy (and more!) in kids thereby enabling them to live a life of their choice. Having studied in an education system that has always revolved around examinations, I can now see why life skills education is as important as it is.

The discussion around the significance of life skills was almost non-existent in our classrooms, more so in municipal schools. And this is exactly why I decided to run the Mumbai Marathon 2017 for them – to ensure that our children get access to education that will help them apply in real life what their books have taught them.

If you, like me, believe in the work that Apni Shala is doing and believe in the cause of life skills, you can contribute to my campaign.

I aim to raise INR 38,000 for this cause through my run in the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon (SCMM) 2017. The funds received will go towards sustaining life skills education of 67 children in the M-West Ward of Mumbai - a ward with one of the lowest Human Development Indices in the city.

Let’s makes lives better, together.

Dear Supporters,

Thank you all for your generous contributions to Apni Shala. Through the funds raised, we are trying to assist our children (studying in the 7th and 8th grade) in coming up with feasible solutions and their take on various community issues through our three step process, i.e,
  • Brainstorming and understanding the community
  • Preparing questionnaires and observing the community with the help of experts.
  • Addressing the various issues taken up.
Some of the campaigns which are children have taken up in the past include Eve Teasing in their community, and based on their primary research and data collected, they were able to lodge a formal police complaint. The police found the data provided to be really useful in curbing eve teasing, as the kids were able to correctly identify the timelines during which these acts were prominent.
Another example being helping reduce the helplessness of uneducated women in their localities (who have only studied till the 2nd grade), by conducting a week long workshop where these women were taught how to fill a form, tally a bill and sign on documents, which greatly reduced the chances of such women being duped by vendors.

Currently, the children are in the data collection phase of the program and will be presenting on topics which they feel are important to them and their community in March.

Thank you for all your support in helping our children.
