This paper is based on a national study which involves application based research design comprising a random trial experiment (RTE), teacher and student interviews and lesson observations. It is to evaluate whether the teaching of science linked to its fundamental engineering applications, would improve the student outcomes in writing and understanding skills along with sustainable interest of the student in the subject. The RTE involved 168 students of over 12 schools in west of India and was a complete randomized study. Classes were randomly allocated to comparable groups after the topic had been matched for subject teacher knowledge. The statistical data was supported by 1 interview with each teacher and 2 interviews with each student in focus in each class giving a total of 41 teacher interviews and 82 student interviews. In addition to it, the final summaries by students over the topics were collected. The results indicated an impressive positive change in understanding of students along with keen interest for relevant field to pursue it as their topic of further study. The regression analysis indicated that there was a strong impact of the subject teacher knowledge on the success of the experiment trials. It also clarifies that teacher found the use of discussion of realistic applications to be the most salient feature of this experiment.
