Partner with The Little Humans Of CPS Rangarajapuram

This picture was taken a week after I started teaching my superstars, to commemorate the first time they all sat down to listen.  We have come a long way since then.
Today, after a month into their third grade, kids have have begun to epitomize the value of community.  (Harini teaching friends in her group)

Our kids, hailing from the low income communities of Rangarajapuram, kodambakkam and despite the absence of any support like in the private schools, have shown immense potential on par with kids from high income backgrounds.  They have fared exceptionally well in a number of competitions like the math Olympiad, sports and art events.

The data from academic year 2016-2018 can be found below.

Reading level (English) growth   - 0.7 years
Reading level (Tamil) growth      - 1 year
Growth in math mastery             - 47%
Children demonstrate values of the class without teacher reinforcement. They are able to make connections to what they have learnt to themselves and their future goals.

Our Vision for this year :
"We envision our class to be the democratic republic of Begumpura, a community where we support and seek support from each other and other stakeholders to achieve our goals"
( When we discussed about what an ideal Rangarajapuram would look like)

We want to envision our class to be a utopian community of Begumpura (a place written about by Sant Ravidas to be one that has no sorrow and where everyone is equal) and reimagine and work towards an ideal egalitarian Rangarajapuram, the community we live in.  We are co-creating a constitution for our class and the management system would mimic that of a democratic government with everyone taking up different roles. We will be demonstrating the values of community, courage and awareness towards reaching our goals not limited to academics. We seek your partnership in working towards this vision.

We are raising funds to repopulate the school library which was mostly destroyed in the Chennai floods in addition to
  • Resources like worksheets, short books, stationery items, etc for the academic year.
  • Electronics - a PC and a projector
  • Fee for olympiad and other competitions ( I enroll all interested kids for any event)
  • Classroom infrastructure - painting the classroom and getting a white board
  • Field trips for kids 3-5 times in the year
  • Enrollment in art, dance and other extra curricular classes
  • End of year showcase - TEDx like forum in school with children, community leaders and educators sharing their ideas of education
Your investment in our class will be a step towards creating a more joyful, equal and compassionate world, for the children of today, are leaders of tomorrow.

With gratitude,
30 Little humans and a large human of CPS Rangarajapuram

Dear Friends and Family,

Firstly, thank you for helping us give our kids better resources in classes and helping us access extra curricular activities and events. From  winning prizes  in a city wide student fest to facilitating math marathons in the class, your contribution has gone a long way in making our year more awesome.

Here is a sneak peak into what happened in term 2 and 3.
1. Math Marathon

A full day student led math solvathon where student leaders tutored their peers in solving math worksheets aligned to their grade level standards. More than 1400 questions were solved at the end of the day.

2. Librarians from Germany who were in Chennai for the Librarian Congress spent a day at CPS Rangarajapapuram helping us catalog the books and held story telling sessions for Children and Teachers.

Kids also spent some of their weekends in the Anna Centenary Library

3. CSK - Chennai Students Kondattam -is an Annual city wide literary, sports and cultural event where more than 30 schools and 3000 kids participated. Little Humans of Rangarajapuram won many prizes in various competitions like elocution, Drawing, 50 m dash, Pictionary, etc.

4.  Morning meetings - Constitution and social justice

The Constitution was the theme for the term and the lesson were integrated with values in the preamble. Some of the morning meetings had discussions about social issues and students were encouraged to discuss and express their thoughts.

Besides, Children have grown in their performance in Math and English and have been lauded by the BRTEs after the End of year SSA assessments.

Grade 3 ended with a graduation ceremony where Parents were called as chief guests and certificates and medals were awarded to all children based on their performance over the last two years.

My tenure as the teacher for the Little Humans of CPS Rangarajapuram has come to an end and Ms.Divya, a graduate from Christ University, has taken over as the new class teacher. We are setting up an after school community space where we intend to help kids with academic and other skills beyond school. The remaining funds will be used for this space.

Thank you again for supporting us over the last year and We hope you ll continue to do so in the year to come. We ll be more than happy to have you here if you want to visit either the class or the community space.

With Love and Gratitude,
Krishna

Dear Supporters,

We have received most of the books that we had ordered. We have collected a good collection of books ranging from National geographic young reader series to Roald Dahl and Dr.Seuss.

Over the last two weeks, kids have had their independent reading time regularly. It was so joyful to see some of them reading a book for the first time on their own.

(Below, Kannan and Guna read their first book independently)

Over December we will be working on making the classroom space better - painting, fixing electric utilities and furniture for teachers. Will post an update soon :)

Your contribution goes a long way in making learning a joyful experience for our kids. Thank you for the support. Do spread the word :)

Dear Partners of CPS Rangarajapuram,

Thank you for your donations so far. It gives me immense pleasure to update the progress of the campaign.  We have begun buying and stocking books for our class library and are also in the process of buying the projector.

The funds that we are withdrawing now will be used to reimburse some of the payments and for payment of book orders that will be delivered to us over this week.   With the start of the new term last week, we cannot wait to get our children engaged in the magical world of books.

I will write back to you about the smiles you have helped create in our next update. Until then, it ll be amazing if you share the campaign to your friends and family.  We have reached 1/3rd of the fundraiser and with your help, reaching the target is going to be easy.

Thanks again for your support.  Please call/text if you have any clarifications and if you want to visit the classroom and see the joy for yourself.

Best,
Krishna and the Little humans
