Ramya is a 9th grade student studying in Kaidala school near Tumkur - a rural district 70 kms away Bangalore city. While Ramya's father is trying to make ends meet working as a local mason, the 14 year old dreams of supporting her family's income by working as an engineer someday.
But a bright student like Ramya might soon quit her school like her other classmates and simply give an open school exam later in the year. As the school has been lacking basic sanitation facilities, senior girls like Ramya are finding it even more challenging with the onset of puberty and to relieve themselves when nature calls.
Leaving school in senior year is common sight among girls and students at Kaidala school that teaches children from marginalised families. Two years back the school had 95 students, now that number has dropped to 75.
With only one functional toilet used by both boys and girls, the situation is leading to a long queue outside the toilet and sometimes the students are resorting to open defecation/urination.
Girls who have special sanitation requirements find it even more challenging. Broken doors and a damaged roof do not provide them with the privacy they need to manage their menstrual needs.
On Lisa's 5th Birthday, Priya and me have decided to construct a toilet for girls at Kaidala school and build a new urinal block for boys with overhead water storage facility.
It's devastating to know that a few miles from our home, there is a community that lacks basic amenity like hygienic sanitation. As young children spend most of their day in school, we believe that a provision for healthy sanitation is very important.
Like every year, we won't be accepting any gifts for Lisa. We recommend you to please contribute here as a gift to Lisa's 5th Birthday. We believe, investing in sanitation for this school will lead to better educational outcomes.
With the funds received, we are also planning on fixing the door, replacing broken toilet pans, installing pipes and fixing the roof/tiles of the existing one toilet at the school.
COST:
Our goal is to raise Rs.40000 to build a toilet and renovate the existing toilet.
The following is the breakup:
Rs 14000 labour charges and Rs 26000 for the material and logistics.
TIMELINE:
Our timeline for setting up this project is 2 months from the date of fundraiser completion.
We hope to raise enough funds in the first month to start developing the infrastructure and build washrooms for girls in the school.
