Help Make Spiti the Valley of Children’s Books!

Spiti Valley is a cold desert mountain region located in the Himalayas (altitude of 3,800 mts above sea level). The area is known for its difficult terrain and sub-zero temperatures, making it difficult for civil society organizations to carry out sustained interventions here. As a result, children do not have access to age-appropriate, quality children’s literature. We are trying to bridge this gap.

We are currently reaching 25 government primary schools in Spiti, directly impacting over 400 children. Our plan is to increase this reach to all 69 government primary schools.

Here's how your contribution will help:

INR 100 = 1 book
INR 500 = 5 books
INR 5,000 = 100 books
INR 50,000 = A reading corner in a government school
INR 2,00, 000 = A village library

Dear Supporters,

It has been especially difficult to reach the children in Spiti Valley in the last few months, given the current situation. Our team members haven't been able to reach Spiti since the locals have imposed restrictions on the entry of outsiders into the valley.

Thankfully, some members of the team are Spiti locals, who have been braving numerous challenges to be able to put books into the hands of children. While our focus has primarily been on reaching the children studying in government primary schools, we have also extended our reach to other young readers, such as nuns living in monasteries. Not just this, we have also started recording story videos in multiple languages so that children have the experience of listening to stories as well.

Thank you

Hello everyone!

As we step into 2020 and look back at the year, we can't help but feel a deep sense of gratitude towards every single person who has supported us in this journey. It is because of this support that we have been able to set up reading corners in 60+ government schools, trained teachers in reading stories to children and piloted a book-making project for children so they can make their voices heard. To receive a detailed report on what we achieved in 2019, please write to us at teamloab@gmail.com

But we are not done. In 2020, we plan to set up reading corners in more schools, engage more teachers, create more books and take art into classrooms. And you can help us! Follow us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/letsopenabook/) and Instagram (lets_open_a_book) and share our updates with friends and family. And please share the link to this fundriaser with as many people as you can, each share could bring one more child closer to books!

With heartfelt gratitude,
