    Marginalised Communities

    from India

With the second wave, things have got tough for the trans community & marginalised sex workers. Last year with your support, we were able to help over 45K migrants & also support the marginalised trans & sex worker community for over 6 months.

During the second wave & current lockdown community has been hit the most. Their basic need of food & medical needs are not taken care...

“I have resumed sex work as I don't have any option....my children would go hungry, otherwise.  They look towards me with expectation, what can I do? There are times when I think I have failed as a mother....” said Reshma, a sex worker and mother of 2 children, desperation and helplessness written all over her face...

And this is just the tip of the iceberg. There was Geetha who said, “I get only Rs 200 per client. But do I have a choice? After all, I have three young children to feed, pay monthly expenses and manage the home alone."  While this was the story of the sex workers, the trans community was also crying out aloud. “Earlier each shopkeeper used to give us Rs 10 or more. Now, with the pandemic and businesses facing huge loss, they mostly turn us away. Now there is lockdown again. What do we do? Where do we go? ,” rues Savitha, a trans woman.

While Covid-19 has dealt a cruel blow to the entire country, the sex workers and transgenders have been badly hit. With social distancing becoming the ‘new normal’, the sex workers are left on the streets, literally. Between the risk of starvation and that of Covid, they have chosen the latter. Similarly, for transgenders, begging and sex work are no longer feasible sources of income. “We often go to sleep on an empty stomach and are forced to put our medical requirements on hold. But how long can we continue like this?” wonders Savitha.

Being You is committed to extending a helping hand to these marginalised and often forgotten segments of society. Their only hope of survival is YOU! Our aim is to provide them help in terms of ration, medical etc...

One small decision, one generous step, can help them have a second shot at life and living.
