Tabrez Khan loves to smile. Whether he is attending his singing, dancing or yoga class. He is always first to participate and full of laughter. His lessons give him great pleasure and he is always eager to learn.Tabrez is fourteen years old and suffers from Cerebral Palsy (CP). It results from damage to the developing brain, usually before birth.

CP is a permanent disability that affects various everyday functions. More than 65% of people with CP will require a wheelchair, 60% have speech impairment, 21% will be unable to speak at all and 84% of people with cerebral palsy experience chronic pain. There is NO KNOWN CURE for Cerebral Palsy.

A person suffering from these multiple impediments needs inputs from an inter-disciplinary team comprising of occupational therapists, physiotherapists, psychologists and social workers, special educators and vocational trainers.

Tabrez came to ADAPT when he was eleven. He could not walk or balance himself on his feet. Coming from a very low income family, his father could not afford fees of some schools and some schools did not accept him because of his disability. With the right guidance however, within a month of attending ADAPT, he could read and write simple sentences in English. Tabrez is not very mobile or verbal. He requires physiotherapy along with speech therapy, which he cannot access due to the costs involved. The financial obligations of a child with special needs keep the parents in a constant state of tension and because of the time and parental attention that he needs, his mother is unable to take up full time work.

ADAPT has been giving training and support to hundreds of children who struggle with this condition, and their family for over 44 years. Currently more than 300 children are being given support through education, therapy, aid and appliances, and skills training.

ADAPT spends approximately Rs 8000 per month per beneficiary. It does not receive any support from the government or political organisations, and they are largely sustained by corporate sponsorship and donations from private individuals.

There are many children in need of ADAPT’s services. In a society that does not recognize the rights and needs of people living with disability, your support can go a long way to empower them to live independently and provide them with necessary therapy. Your support can give Tabrez, others like him, and their families a chance at a better life.

We plan to raise an amount of Rs. 5.28 lacs to carry forward these activities at an optimum level and provide twenty families a modicum of relief. Twenty children coming from marginalized communities can look forward to a productive life with your support.

You can contribute Rs.2,200 for a month’s support, Rs. 6600 to support for 3 months,Rs. 13,200 for 6 months and Rs. 26,400 for a year’s continuing support.
