Widows children and Women of Tihar jail

    from Delhi

Hello everyone

My name is Amarjeet kaur. I am a social worker doing prison ministry for the last 15 years. I started this ministry when my husband was in jail. Though he has been out for many years now, still I continue to do this work that is because I understand the pain and the need of people in prison especially the women with infants.

There are lot of misconceptions and wrong perceptions that we have about prisoners. we say that everyone should get the basic human rights including respect but do we actually do this. No, we dont.

The idea of helping the women and kids in prison is to provide them with the basic needs of humans ie. clothes and milk for the newborns and kids. To help them believe that there is still humanity left in this world. These children born in jail are not responsible for anything, still they are treated like prisoners by not getting the adequate nourishment and proper education. The idea of humanity becomes alien to them, so by this simple act of kindness (giving suits undergarments and money for buying sanitary napkins or milk bottles etc) we show them the positive side of our society.

Now many of you must be wondering that prisoners do get clothes from Jail authorities. True, but only those who have been convicted of their crimes however, at present, maximum number of people in womens jails are those who are still under trial (people under trial are not subjected to most of the benefits given to convicts) so they do not get any clothes, milk bottles, sanitary napkins etc.

The amount asked for is for the following things
  • 10 ladies to get 2 suits each
  • 10 ladies to get 3 pair of undergarments
  • chappals as per the need of women
  • hair bands
ladies with kid's requirement
  • bottles
  • diapers
  • dry milk (at times mothers body do not produce sufficient milk due to malnourished body)
  • New mothers are given 500 INR each month because the above said items cannot be provided to them from outside. They have to buy the material from the Tihar canteen inside the jail.

I have been supporting these ladies on an individual level untill now. I am not very rich. I come from a low middle class family with a heart to help. I was recently informed about this platform of crowdfunding.  So my daughter suggested to see if their are any other people out there with the same passion to help other and create a positive change in the society.

P.S : I am a social worker but i have not studied MSW infact I am 4th class pass because my condition did not let me study. (I really wish someone would have had the courage to finance my studies and to convince my parents when i was a child.)  This story has been written in English by my daughter.

I would be willing to share the receipts of the money given to the ladies. clicking pictures is not allowed in the jail but if anyone is willing to visit jail with me then you are more than welcome.

Best
