    This fundraiser will benefit

    Meera Devi

    from New Delhi

Meera, is one of those at the margin who are struggling everyday to get a hold at the city space of Delhi  for years. She is a mother of four daughters and the sole bread earner for the family. She earns 3000 Rupees a month by manual scavenging with which her family can hardly manage to survive in the city. She is also suffering from a chronic disease and therefore cannot work everyday to sustain the day to day expenditures.

Meera's small 'home' in Rajiv Camp in the Patparganj area has been demolished in the process of city development one year ago and since then she has no place to go. Days after days she lived on the roads with her daughters and now she could managed to put up a sack next to the water pipeline. Her roadside sack has no basic facilities, no access to water, no toilet, no place to cook and also no sufficient space for all of them to sleep in proper. However, after months of struggle and negotiations by various non-governmental organisation, the Government has finally agreed to provide Meera a flat in one of the resettlement colonies of Delhi by depositing Rupees 1,42,000 (1,12,000+30,000).  The flat has a room with one toilet and a small kitchen space.

Meera has no money sufficient to pay for the flat. All her life she could only manage to save Rupees 60,000 where she needs 82,000 more to avail the flat. The Delhi high court have asked Meera to deposit the money within 6 July, 2018, which is just 10 days from today.

I met Meera during my doctoral field work where I found her to be the only one left to avail the flat in the resettlement colony. Though there are other two Jhuggis near her, they have certainly been able to arrange the money and soon will move to the flats leaving Meera alone to survive in her roadside shanty. Though I have no prior relation with Meera, I have seen her documents as well as witnessed her present situation which compelled me to stand for humanity. I believe we can help Meera by contributing the remaining amount so that she and her daughter can have a proper roof over their head and can dream about a better future ahead. It is a basic human right to life in a livable and secure place and your small contribution can surely make a big difference to their life.
