Help us provide holistic education to children in affordable schools

Story

We understand that it is just a matter of chance that we are where we are today. We didn't choose the family that we were born into, or choose the fact that our parents could afford to give us quality education. Every time we make a choice, we feel lucky. However, we cannot help but think …what if? What if these choices weren't available to us?
It is this thought that makes us work towards that one day when every child in India will attain an excellent education. The family or the demographics that a child is born into should not determine his or her destiny. We understand the importance of education but more importantly, we understand the value of each of those 320 million lives and the potential in every one of them. Imagine 320 million astronauts, or 320 million scientists. Imagine 320 million change-makers driving India forward. That's what we're working towards - A day when every child gets the opportunity to attain an excellent education. A day when we can empower every human being with choice. Because that's what every child deserves. That's what India deserves.
Current Problems in affordable schools
  1. 27% of all children in grade VIII are unable to read a grade II level text. Almost 57% are unable to solve a 3-digit by 1-digit division sum (ASER 2016)
  2. Of all youth in the age group 14 to 18, 14% are not enrolled anywhere (ASER 2016)
  3. Deep rooted gender inequity in the community which presents step hurdles in the girl child's life; there are few opportunities and even lesser exposure provided to girls.
  4. Schools are unsafe spaces for children as teachers use corporal punishment to manage behavior; community adds on through negative influence of violence and substance abuse.
  5. No provision of co-curricular activities; children miss out on all round development.
  6. Untrained teachers with low motivation; they have low expectation of themselves and their students.
  7. School leadership lacks vision and skills to facilitate excellent education.
Hypothesis and Proposed Solution
We endeavor to solve this complex problem by developing collective leadership among all stakeholders of a school. We would start with the teachers and sports coaches, by immersing them in a Fellowship of 2 years and once they graduate, create a movement of determined, passionate leaders to transform education.
Our solution is based on the assumption that proper education of a child can only happen through developing leadership capabilities in the people of the community. The collective action of these leaders will ensure all children, irrespective of their background, receive holistic education.

Our Vision
All children will receive holistic education which will empower them to be change makers.

Our Mission
To develop lifelong leaders in affordable communities by training and mentoring teachers in knowledge, skills, mindsets through an immersive 2 years Fellowship program.

Our Previous Work
  • As Assistant School Leaders, we observed that  appreciation and mentoring of teachers has helped develop a teacher and got them invested in child development.
  • They now use teaching aids, new pedagogy techniques and also engage with parents on a regular basis.

  • We have been organizing The Right Pitch (TRP), a sports cum life-skill development program for the last 4 years.
  • We have seen how health awareness, confidence, leadership and values like teamwork, hard work and grit got reinforced in the children through sports.

2018-19 Goals
