Gender inequality and gender stereotyping has become an ingrained social construct that surfaces each and every single human interaction of our day - today lives. This kind of gender stereotyping has become openly visible and no-one is immune from it. As a teaching fellow, the first day when I stepped into the school itself, I saw various kinds of gender differences among my students. Boys-girls did not like to sit together. They did not want to play, talk or work in teams with one another. It was shocking for me to see that these young 10 -11 year old kids are already gripped in the claws of gender stereotypes. There were also cases when kids were forced to adopt gendered roles and identities which they were not comfortable with.A kid in my classroom who is biologically a female who did not feel like one, were forced by parents, school staff and other students to dress or act like a girl. This became very suffocating for her, leading to a mental trauma. There are so many such cases which we come across throughout our lives to which most of us turns our back around.

Looking at all of these scenarios, We Can (Prayas), a project initiated in November 2018 and run by a group of three sensitized women, aims to organize an event on the same lines. Our team has already organized 8 awareness workshops on the tabooed concept of ‘gender and sex’, ‘good and bad touch’, ‘consent’, ‘puberty’ and ‘menstrual hygiene’ in low-income schools and communities in where more than 500 children have participated. For creating awareness around menstrual hygiene we have conducted workshop where women are taught how to create cloth- based reusable sanitary pads.

As the next step We Can (Prayas) will be organizing a city-wide event, tentatively in the second week of December for the desired stakeholders. The event will include workshop on gender stereotypes, art exhibition, theatrical presentation by the kids on the same issue and exhibition of cloth-pads made by women of low - income communities.

Since we are a non- profit project and we do it with low-income communities, we need funds to conduct such an event. If you believe in this cause and wants to give your hand in making gender neutral world please contribute your bit to make this event successful.
