My name is Basavaraj and I studied in this Primary School decades ago too. So have hundreds and thousands of villagers over the years. I studied in the same school, played Kho-Kho on the same ground and went on to graduate from college. Since 1990, I have been working for the community here and now I am the vice-president of the Hireharkuni Gram Panchayat. This is my 3rd year of my 5 year term.
The Grama Shikshana Samiti is a newly formed organization comprised of key stakeholders of the village, Our vision is to ensure each child in the village gets quality education in safe and sound spaces. Hireharkuni is a village of 4000 households with several government schools, however this school which is one of the oldest has been continually ignored and is falling apart due to poor care.
The school now has 140 children studying in it and we hope that with the newly modeled school, enrollment would increase. Currently, the infrastructure in the school is unsafe for the children. The roofs are falling apart, sometimes parts of the ceiling gives out and affects classroom activity, Moreover, it is harmful for the children, Yet, we do not have the funds to rebuild the school on our own. As Hireharkuni is an agricultural economy with no mechanization, the members of the community do not really have at their disposal resources to fund the reconstruction and renovation of the school.
Right now in the monsoon, the classroom and the storage spaces are flooding, The situation is so dire that we are unable to place the computers in the room as we fear it to flood. Recently, the designated room for the Mid-day meals was also flooded and it greatly affected the children. The poor infrastructure is hampering both the teaching and the learning environment of the children.
Despite all of these issues and roadblocks, children who have studied in this school have gone to make it as senior High Court judges in Karnataka, So many of the students of the school have gone on to join the army, become school teachers and lawyers.
We envision a brighter future for this Primary School and we hope help us achieve this dream of providing a safe and secure learning environment for the children of Hireharkuni.
Every child in the country deserves to study in a safe, infrastructurally sound school with access to learning resources.
