Help our mother Poonam Rohira to recover from rare neuro disorder

Reason for fund raising
Our mother, Mrs. Poonam Rohira, age 52, is suffering from Autoimmune encephalitis which is a rare neuro-psychiatric disorder. The cure as informed presently, includes 6-8 weeks of admission in ICCU initially with first line of treatment using IVIG injections and steroids followed by second line of treatment then ICU and ultimately in normal ward. My mother has bravely gotten through 2 weeks so far.

Background/History
In December 2016 she started having problems moving her left hand. We consulted a MD and as suggested by him, carried out few blood tests followed by X-RAYs to identify the cause but, he couldn’t spot anything. Day by day her health started deteriorating and daily routine activities started becoming difficult for her. Gradually she wasn’t able to do anything without help. As these weeks passed by where we were trying to understand what’s really happening, we consulted a Neurologist and he started medication for Nerves disorder followed by MRI scan after 10 days. The MRI scans suggested bulged discs issue. She had now become physically weak and mentally depressed. On Jan 16, 2017 we rushed to admit her to a hospital in Chembur, Mumbai.

Where is the treatment going on?
In Sushrut Hospital, Chembur, Mumbai. After 2 days she was shifted to ICCU. Till date she’s being treated in ICCU since then.
Who is the doctor and what does he say?
Doctor Ramesh Patankar, an efficient Neurologist is handling our mom’s medical case. He suggests we would have to continue the present treatment for more 6-8 weeks to be able to see improvements and provide medications accordingly.
Progress so far
There has been very slight improvements in the recovery process which is a bit slower than expected but we are hoping for the best.

Medical expenses so far (please see below attached documents)
Initial Medical Tests= ~ INR 20,000/-
Medicines= ~ INR 2,00,000/-
Hospital bill till date (5th Feb 2017)= INR 4,68,994/-
Additional tests= ~ INR 35,000/-
Total= ~ 7,23,994/-

What needs to be done going ahead?
As recommended by the doctor, the treatment would continue for more 6-8 weeks. In order to adhere to the same, we would need to bear twice to thrice of the above mentioned expense, that is it would reach around 12 to 14 lacs which I cannot bear all on my own.

Our family background
We are a family of 4 (mom, dad, younger brother, me) and I am sole earner software engineer. We live in a rented apartment and I cannot afford taking a loan right now. My mediclaim of INR 2,00,000 has been exhausted already for the same and we have put all our savings so far in to this. We would still have a long way to go hoping we would have the help from you in seeing our mom smiling and back up again recovered thanking everyone who might help us.

Our request to you
It’s my heartfelt request to extend your help in any amount possible. All your funds and prayers will help my mother to recover as early as possible and lead a normal life once again with same smile on the face. She is very caring, loving and brave. Now she needs our help to get proper medication.
Thank you!

Dear Well-wishers,

First of all I want to express my sincere appreciation for your great support in my mom’s treatment. It wouldn’t have been possible all alone.
Thank you very much!

Update as on 06th March, 2017

Looking at how rare and complex the disease is, the recovery process is very slow. We tried to seek change in treatment by shifting my mother to Hinduja hospital (Mahim, Mumbai) on 09th Feb, 2017 but, due to unavailability of doctors we shifted her back to Sushrut Hospital and research centre (Chembur, Mumbai) on 15th Feb, 2017 under observation of Dr. Ramesh Patankar.

Treatment progress

As per Dr. Patankar, my mother has shown a slight amount of progress so far and meanwhile, unfortunately, she has caught urine infection due to which currently she is on antibiotics. Doctor wants to make sure she is perfectly ready to accept second line medications following which he will carry out additional tests once this course is completed and would start with second line treatment for Autoimmune Encephalitis.

Medical expenses so far (please see below attached documents)

Second line of treatment is a course of Rituximab injections to be given with an interval of 15-30 days. Due to current delay in treatment, hospital and medical expenses has increased.

Sushrut Hospital bill (16th Jan to 9th Feb)                   =    INR  5,09,231/-
Hinduja hospital bill (9th Feb to 14th Feb)                  =    INR    96,654 /-
Injections, Medicines, Medical tests                             = ~ INR  3,28,000/-
Sushrut Hospital bill (15th Feb to 6th March)             =    INR     75,000/-
Total expenses till date                                                 = ~ INR 10,08,885/-
Outstanding bill                                                                =    INR     49,851/-

According to Doctor, the recovery might take additional 2-3 months and for the same we would need approximately INR 15,00,000 (15 lakhs/1.5million) more apart from current expense of approx. INR 10,09,000 (10.09 lakhs/1 million) to support the treatment (10lakhs + 15lakhs is the current estimated expense).

Our request to you
It’s my heartfelt request to kindly share this link with your friends and further as much as you could to help us receive financial assistance.

Once again, thank you from the depth of my heart for your continuous support and prayers!

Best and Kind Regards,
Karan Rohira
