According to a World Health Organization & World Bank report[1], around 15% of the world’s population lives with some kind of disability. As per the Census of India (2011) 2.2% of India’s population suffers from some kind of disability, which includes Loco motors disability, Visual impairment, Hearing impairment, Speech problems, Learning Disability, Autism and Multiple Disability
Who are we ?
Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust has been deliberately working for the underprivileged section for past many years. Our core focus is to eradicate poverty through our different projects on health, education and Mobility.
We have recently awarded the Google Impact Challenge Award for disability to emerge through breakthrough innovative ideas. Also, we have collaborated with IIT BETiC and Google.org , to develop a innovative process to leverage portable 3D scanning technology to design and fabricate prosthetic devices and footwear that are comfortable and yet affordable for people with disabilities.
Our M.G. Mehta award was honored to Ms.Arunima Sinha, a national level volleyball player who climbed Mt.Everest with prosthetic leg. This award was presented by the much revered Padmavibhushan Shri Ratan Tata.
Project Details
RNCT – Mobility Project
Ratna Nidhi has been a pioneer in organizing mobility camps across India for close to fifteen years. Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust has a fully equipped Jaipur Foot[2] and Caliper fitment center at Mahalaxmi, Mumbai which is manned by trained technicians and equipped with all the machinery required to fabricate Jaipur Foot or Calipers within a matter of hours. Any disabled person is welcome here to give their measurements and avail of the appropriate customized appliance. We provide the following services at our centre:
- Fitting of Calipers to polio affected children/youth.
- Fitting of Jaipur foot prosthetics to amputees.
- Distribution of Hearing aids with Audiogram
- Distribution of equipments. Our team of engineers is well equipped to manufacture these equipments and resolve any technical issue if it may arise.
One of our biggest camps was conducted at Palitana, Gujarat in 2009-10 which served close to 28,549 beneficiaries. The camp was inaugurated by the then Honorable Chief Minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi and was graced by the presence of His Holiness The Dalai Lama.

Success and Failures of Suryavanshi's life...
Years back when Suryavanshi was just two and a half years old, he lost his one leg in an accident. After his parents left for the day’s work, Suryavanshi thought of playing on the road adjoining his house. While he was all lost in his play, a bullock cart ran on his leg losing its balance. Little he knew that he will be never standing again on both his legs. The infection in his leg made his parents take the toughest decision and amputee his leg.
As this incident took place at a very early age, Suryavanshi was never able to imagine the state of standing on two feet. However, this physical condition never came in between his dreams. Suryavanshi with sheer dedication and hard work completed his Masters in Social Work (MSW), and added one more medal in his kitty by completing a 17,000 km cycle run all over India.
Looking at his potentials many of his friends and companion suggested him to fix a Jaipur foot. After months of having Jaipur foot, he was not able to feel comfortable walking. Though it made him realize that with two legs he can achieve more than what he is doing now. Fortunately, Suryavanshi got to know about the work of Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust and decided to take one more chance.
RNCT staff within a day’s time fitted an amputated leg for him and additionally also provided gait training. Within no time Suryavanshi was all set to walk on his own feet and chase his dreams. Suryavanshi is now associated with many non-government organizations as a consultant. And also helps in spreading the work of RNCT so that many other can take benefits from us.
The Need
Every day we have people coming for help at our center to get their caliper fittings. To keep our service going we require continuous supply of materials for our project. Currently we require help to support 100 differently able to provide them artificial limb. A single caliper cost us 2,500 INR.
