Hi!
My name is Dhvani Anumolu. I have been working in the social welfare sector for over 10 years. Thank you in advance for taking the time to read my appeal on behalf of Madras Dyslexia Association which has been dedicated to helping children achieve their dreams since 1991.

Every Child Deserves A Chance

“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid” – Albert Einstein

Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty, which affects one in every five children.

It involves the way information is learned and processed and affects abilities used for learning, such as reading and writing. Dyslexia is not a matter of intelligence or a desire to learn.

Children with dyslexia struggle with most aspects of academic learning. They feel ashamed or embarrassed every time they have to read aloud in class or take a spelling test. They inevitably fall behind in school and are at risk of being bullied for being ‘slow’. They are often characterized as lazy and unmotivated when in reality they are struggling to keep it all together. They are exhausted after a school day as their brains have to work multiple times harder than their peers.

The challenges that they face are not only reflected in their grades but in their failing perception of themselves.

It is heart-breaking to know that almost all dyslexic children have thought that they are stupid at one point or another.

While there is no cure for dyslexia, the best outcomes for dyslexics can be achieved through early identification and research-based, goal-orientated remediation.

A very small percentage of parents in India are able to put their child in a school that offers individualized attention and instruction, get their child professionally assessed, and ensure that their child gets the best remediation possible.

Millions of children across India from low socio-economic backgrounds do not have the same choices.

Government schools in India do not have the resources to provide testing or treatment. Their teachers also do not have the time or training to identify potential learning difficulties early on.

At home, few low-income parents have the time to read and work with their child on a daily basis or afford to get them the specialized literacy instruction that they need.

These children inevitably fall through the cracks in the ‘one-size-fits-all’ public schooling system. With your help, we can give these children the opportunities they need to realize their full potential.

The Madras Dyslexia Association (MDA) is a 28-year old not for profit organization that promotes awareness on specific learning difficulties and provides support and remediation for at-risk children.

Your donations will be used to help MDA meet their targets of conducting a minimum of 20 training programs for pre-primary, primary, and secondary school teachers and setting-up 10 resource rooms free-of-cost in government and government-aided schools in South India in 2021.

MDA's training programs help to empower public school teachers with the knowledge and skills to understand and identify dyslexia and provide effective remediation using scientific, research-backed methods within the mainstream classroom setting.

The resource rooms are dedicated spaces within the school campus with the necessary infrastructure to further help screening, assessment, and monitoring of children facing difficulties and provide remedial support including setting Individualized Education Plans for each child. MDA trains 2 teachers nominated by the school as special educators for every resource room.

Just like it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village of advocates to raise a child who struggles.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and for giving a child a chance she deserves.

Any and all contributions will be of immense help. Do contribute and share this campaign link with your friends and family.
