Her world has always been her husband, an accountant working with a private medium sized firm in Chennai, and their only son in the second grade. When consulted with the doctor, she was diagnosed with a tumour in her brain recently and was immediately admitted in "Chettinad Super Speciality Hospital" (A unit of Rajah Muthiah Chettiar Chartiable and Educational Trust), Rajiv Gandhi Salai, Kelambakkam, Kanchipuram District - 603 103. She underwent a surgery to remove the tumour on 23/05/2018. The family met the costs by partly meeting it from their own savings and borrowing nearly half of the amount from outside. The surgery saved her life, but only to have her strapped to the bed.
Post surgery effects has left her speech arrested and her motor organs, hand and legs, are yet to get back their senses. It has been advised by the doctors that it would take at least six months to eight months to get back on her feet and feel the ground only after continuous treatment and medications. The family is middle class, just like most of us, and they have pooled all their savings to their maximum level towards her medical expenses. Consistent care has to be extended to her under a trained nurse, physiotherapy must be exercised every day, and she has to continue on the medications. It is overbearing for the family if they have to meet all the expenses themselves, for they have no resources to fall upon. Furthermore, the savings have already been used up for her surgery, and they have taken the loan beyond their capacity.
The patient has already been discharged and brought back home. However, the family is undergoing immense stress to meet the day-to-day medical expenses.
