I (Monica Meka) am a Teach For India fellow, Currently working in my second year of fellowship. I teach a bunch of 40 super-energetic, enthusiastic and curious seventh graders of a Government School (Government Kannada and English Model Primary school K.P.Agrahara) in Vijayanagar,Bangalore.
Who is this fundraiser for?
Our kids are change-makers ready to conquer the world, all they need are swords and shields. Only with adequate resources can we prepare our children to face the world. What are swords and shields for a kid if not pens and books?
Who are they?
Our kids, 40 of them, are mostly first-generation learners whose parents, all of whom are daily-wage workers. They want them to have the best learning experience and change the destiny of their births.
What do we aim to do?
We are working to equip our children with resources that would make their learning more enjoyable and relevant.
Essentially, we are looking at building a whole new learning experience for our children. It is our bet that, with a library in our school, this can be made possible. Yes, a library, for which we need lots and lots of books, cupboards to hold them, tables, chairs, charts, white boards, stationer, projector (for common use) and most importantly a small room that needs renovation to hold all these.
Also, our kids are part of the Just For Kicks(JFK) football league. JFK works with young people garner leadership skills using football as a medium. We have seen tangible growth in our children through this program. It's our commitment to let this program run and benefit our children.
We will need about 50000Rs. For this program alone, for it requires escorting children to the venue of the tournament and provide equipments.
Every teacher is a literacy teacher irrespective of the subject they teach. Every child requires grade-level language reading and comprehension skills in English to comprehend and connect with the concepts and to be able to access the innumerable reading material that this world holds. We believe we can create a learning space for them to acquire these skills and to bridge this literacy gap.
Over the last year of our fellowship, I was acquainted with the needs of our children and became more aware of what is it that I want to do before I complete my fellowship in April 2020 that will accelerate their learning. Building a learning space that can be tuned to become sustainable and self-regulatory was the idea that helped me connect the dots.
