We have not named our baby yet. She was born on the 23rd of Feb 2018 at 7.58 AM at Maipakpi Maternity and Child Hospital, Imphal, Manipur. My name is Muhen Khundrakpam and my wife’s name is Jaya Devi Sarungbam. We had all the plans to welcome our first born baby. We and our family waited in anticipation and with full excitement. However, our excitement was short lived as we found out that our baby was born with 3 distinct congenital defects.
The first one is called tracheoesophageal fistula (meaning an abnormal connection between the esophagus and the trachea)
Second one is called Choanal atresia (blockage of the nasal passage)
Third one is called Microtia (underdeveloped external part of the ear)
The first two required surgery as it was the only option available. However, the surgery could not be done immediately since the baby was not stable and ready for operation. After being on ventilator support for 3 days, she was operated upon on the 27th of Feb 2018. The operation was successful and doctors did an amazing job.
Our baby is still under ventilator support and slowly responding to treatments. As per the doctors she will need to stay for another 5-6 weeks in the NICU for complete recovery before she can go home.
Our baby will need another operation when she is a little older to get her esophagus connected to the stomach. For now, the doctors have inserted a feeding tube in her stomach through which she will be fed till she is ready for the next operation.
We had our finances planned till the pregnancy and we were about to venture into a planned expenditure starting from the first month after the baby’s birth. All our plans went haywire when we came to know of our baby’s condition. The sudden operation and the NICU stay will be a huge expenditure. The Hospital expects the overall bill to reach 6 lakhs. We are fortunate to have some discount from the management as they have decided to waive off some charges on pure humanitarian grounds.
I work in a Medical Equipment Sales and Supply firm. My wife used to work at a travel agency. We have been able to raise some portion of the required amount through friends and family. However, we are still short of the amount. We are looking to raise this amount through donations from kind hearted souls on the internet.
We request you to please help us in giving our baby the required treatment and get her home.
