Story

My name is Aanchal Bindal and am blessed with the fantastic opportunity of pursuing a Fellowship at Teach for India for 2 years. I teach and learn with my 50 enthusiastic 4th and 5th graders at Rakhial English School, a low income government school in Ahmedabad in India.

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world!" These words by Nelson Madela come to life for me when I think of my 50 inspiring and inspired, young minds who have the potential to re-define this nation and the globe.

Vedant is a transformation leader, he makes sure that he lends a helping hand, hug or his notebooks whenever needed. Vikas has the kindest heart; be it sharing his tiffin with a friend or making sure that no one harms the cows on our campus. Aana wants to be a world leader because she thinks that girls' perspective can make everything better. Mehvish can read all day long and continue through the night just so that she can learn more. Faizan's struggle with his reading levels hold no power in front of his energy and excitement in school. ALL my students are bundles of joy and love with such a strong zeal for learning.

From their love for dinosaurs and reading to writing funny stories, from discussion on Malala Yousufzai's life to enacting drama pieces on Captain Underpants, from debates on 'Why must every girl be given the best of education' to consistently solving tough math sums; everything my students do, makes me realize how dedicated and deserving they are.

Their dreams are big and so are the challenges in the path. Most of my students come from socio-economically marginalized families where parents cannot provide them with access to basic educational and childhood resources. Access and exposure to the outside world are limited but the curiosity only grows!

As a part of my work, I am trying my best to provide them with a safe space filled with love, learning and loads of books! To enable holistic learning and cater to their individual learning styles- visual, auditory, tactile and so on- I need help to provide them with resources.

Here is your platform to do good for the world and empower the next team of heroes and leaders. The funds raised by you and me will be used towards the following and much more-

  • Classroom and personal libraries- To build their love for reading, and encourage their curious minds and well as impart the necessary skills for reading comprehension. My kids would cherish having their own collection of books at home and school. I am also looking forward to having monthly subscriptions to books like National Geographic for Kids and children's newspapers.
  • Writing and people resources- Workbooks, worksheets and notebooks to improve their writing abilities. My kids would love for their learning to never pause due the lack of books to write in. Along with this, it would be of a great impact to hire and invite skilled professionals to our classroom to conduct workshops catering to specific needs to build awareness and to enhance understanding.
  • Furniture for the classroom- A cupboard or open holder for storing books, games and stationery, mats for the students to sit on and some benches.
  • Stationery and art supply-  My class loves to draw and express their ideas, emotions and thoughts. I wish for my students to have their own sets of drawing and crafts supply which could keep them engaged at home as well as a classroom supply for their projects and weekly sessions.
  • Games and Puzzles- Fun and creative board games and puzzles will not only boost their learning but also challenge them academically and socially.
  • Trips and excursions- There are some wonderful opportunities in and around Ahmedabad that can foster learning and fun. Trips to zoos, museums, science centers and various workshops would be experiences that add to their lives immensely.
As I look forward to collectively creating magic with you all, I urge you to think about what excellent education and exposure to resources might have looked like for you as a child or will look like for your children and imagine if my students should have anything less simply because of who they are and where they come from. I have complete faith that this act of kindness will not just light up my students' lives but also play a role in impacting the education sector as a whole.

Please feel free to reach out to me in case of any questions, clarifications or suggestions.
